8th lutz #1 Posted November 14, 2007 http://gonintendo.com/?p=29491 Nintendo’s official store has a note saying that the official Wi-Fi USB connector has been discontinued “until further notice”.
Atariboy #2 Posted November 14, 2007 Odd, I guess they think every Wii and DS owner is likely to have a wireless router compatible with those devices... Glad I bought one for Mario Kart when I could.
Lord Helmet #3 Posted November 14, 2007 Aren't almost all wireless routers compatible anyway? I never really saw the need for these adapters. Wireless routers are silly cheap now.

There are people that don't have a wireless router because of lack of decent security.

Longhorn Engineer #6 Posted November 15, 2007 Only nintendo devices could connect through the Wi-Fi adapter. And you could lock it to certain nintendo devices via mac address.

The Wi-fi Usb doesn't use magic to communciate. There are people out there that don't like wireless routers plain and simple. you can look at gonintendo. com for that for an example. The good thing with the Nintnedo wi-fi usb adapter is it only effects a nintendo ds or a nintendo wii. Edited November 15, 2007 by 8th lutz
Hackmann #8 Posted November 15, 2007 The good thing with the Nintnedo wi-fi usb adapter is it only effects a nintendo ds or a nintendo wii. Not really. Anyone with the capability to crack any kind of Wi-Fi security is more than well-equipped enough to spoof that. Nintendo's Wi-Fi USB adapter is no more secure than a standard wireless router in any useful sense. Particularly if you're talking about using it for a Wii, which supports WPA and WPA2. Atariboy #9 Posted November 15, 2007 My wireless router is provided by the cable company and also incorporates a modem. The DS can't detect a signal from it (While the PSP can connect just fine), so not every wireless router is compatible. So the usb adapter has came in handy, and should be even more useful when I buy a Wii someday.
zeropolis79 #10 Posted November 16, 2007 All my ISP wireless boxes have worked with mine and my daughter's DS's and my current ISP and the previous work well with the Wii. (I'm using the Wii to type these messages now)

I suppose...but tethering a laptop with cat5 across the whole house would really suck
Uzumaki #12 Posted November 17, 2007 Or poking holes through solid wood wall to hook up other computers in the house. My house is well over 100 years old and the construction design is vastly different than modern houses, I don't think I can easily run cables through the house without tearing up too much of the wall and I am not buying new wood for the walls. Too expensive and plaster wall don't have the same look or feel.
NightSprinter #13 Posted November 17, 2007 Well, also keep in mind not every place you go to with wireless access will easily allow for DS owners to go online. I work at the Kalahari Resort, and the wireless access requires you to use a browser and log on. So for a case like this, one needs a laptop with Windows on it. Though I've had no success, I have read that people have managed to use modified drivers to turn the connector into an full-blown access point.
