ASSEMblergames.com message board problems

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've tried twice to register with the ASSEMblergames.com message board and had my registration deleted twice with no real explanation of what I've done wrong. Both times after email verification, the account has been deleted. I've never signed up with them before, and there was nothing offensive about my user name.

I'd leave it alone at this point, except that I *really* want to get in because I am into super-obscure systems, and can't find any other place with people who know as much about these types of systems.

I use this forum for more well known systems, but also I find myself finding the ASSEMblergames.com message board posts when searching in google for the the more obscure systems that I love to death: such as the Tomy Tutor, Videobrain, etc...

Can anyone help explain what's wrong?

That's the short version, here are the specifics:

I do all the normal things, register, get an email, respond to the email to activate, but then it says that a moderator must activate the registration.

Then I get the following email:

"Account removed at The ASSEMblergames.com message board - home of the obscure!

Dear missyrelm,

Unfortunately your registration at The ASSEMblergames.com message board

- home of the obscure did not meet our membership requirements.

Therefore your registration was deleted."

I've tried emailing to find out why... no response.

I looked up the FAQ for Registration problems and here is all it says:

http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10566

Q: I registered as fagcrusher2000, and my account was deleted,

what gives?

A: We don't tolerate names that are offensive, make a new *decent* account or please leave.

I can't thing of anything offensive about the name "missyrelm", but I figured, who knows, maybe it means something nasty in another language or something, so I tried again with an even more neutral name and a different email.

Same thing happens. Same email saying the account is deleted.

I would give up except that I really don't know of another forum where I can get together with other people into super obscure machine.... Can anyone explain or help?

Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think that this name might offend a few people.

That's actually from the FAQ as an example.

I did not use that name at all!

I used the same name I use here, missyrelm.

What you are referring to is a quote from ASSEMblergames.com Registration FAQ:

http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10566

The reason why I quoted that is that the only reason given in the FAQ for deleting a registration attempt is for having offensive names, and since I wasn't using offensive names, I have no idea why my account was deleted...

That does seem pretty bizarre. I will often delete new accounts that are created from countries that in my experience result in spam being posted to the forum. This includes: India, China, South Korea, Philippines, Russia, Israel, and others. Only once has someone written to me asking why their account was deleted before it was validated. I will usually also delete accounts that are being registered with private addresses (10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255). But I can see that you don't fall into either of these categories, so who knows what other criteria they may be using. Spammers are a huge problem for forums right now, sadly.

I've had problems registering for forums before because my email was from a domain they had blacklisted. Many forums don't accept addresses from free email services. One site in particular was very picky. Since i wasn't willing to give my paid address to anyone except people I've met in real life, I couldn't register.

It's possible that you'll get a reply to your email after some time has passed. On another forum, it took a week before they activated my account, and others complained about the same thing. Some sites don't keep up as well as others.

It would be interesting if some system could be devised for users to get "not a spammer" references from other forums. I'm not sure exactly how it would work, but off the top of my head, perhaps the process could be automated in the forum software. Identification might be based on your IP address and your intended registration name. The receiving admin would check that the sending site is legitimate. Then they'd decide to allow that particular name to be registered from the given IP, or perhaps from whatever dynamic range belongs to your ISP. The reference would expire before too long.

I just made that up, so I'm sure there's problems. But if people wanted to dig into it a fairly good system could probably be conceived which would cut down on spammers.

Oh, the internet is such a small place...

I'll let ASSEMbler know that you're having a problem. He should be able to sort it out.

The only other thing that I can think of is that your email address might be from a site his list of banned email addresses.

I'll drop him a PM and point him to this thread. He's busy, but usually takes care of this sort of thing pretty fast.

Edit:

BingBingBing, here's your answer.

What's so weird about it is as I said, after I read the FAQ, I tried again, with another name ("thingsdunchanged") with a different email of the same name, and got the same denial...

Thanks so much to Blur2040 and ASSEMbler...

I'll try registering with username "missyrelm" again now. I appreciate both of you taking the time to help with this...
