Rise of the Video game (documentary type show)

Recommended Posts

Is this the same rehashed material we've seen before on "the history of video games" shows, where they namedrop Atari, Nolan Bushnell, to Nintendo, to Sony & microsoft to now?

In watching part 2 I just get frusturated, there's a lot of misinformation or relevant points that are completely ignored combined with quasi advertising from people like Peter Moore from EA (former President of Sega and former head of Microsoft's Xbox division and based on his many comments most likely still employed by MS at the time of the filming) it just got bad.

Fun examples of misinformation are inferences that the Genesis/ Mega Drive launched with Sonic the Hedgehog as the pack-in.

A lot of the program just seems like a giant commercial for EA.

Main reason why I quit watching. All of the stuff they don't get quite right irritates me. It's as if most of these shows are made by people who were born in the 1990s and have no clue about what happened. It's like they are digging up the fossils of an alien race and are ignorantly trying to make sense of what they find. There have to be enough people left alive who were teens and adults during the 1980s and beyond that played with this stuff and remember it all who can work on these shows and make sure that everything is correct.

I don't think they said it "launched" with Sonic. Just that Sonic was a pack-in.

The 2nd part wasn't as good as the first. I thought they went too far too quickly. They're already up to the current generation. What are they going to do for part 3 & 4?

Online games. FPS, MMORPGs etc.

I got bored with it by the time they started crapping on about Second Life, WOW, etc.

This show blows. It jumps all over the place and is going WAY too fast to get anything out of the early shows. I think it's a huge disappointment.

The 2nd part was very misleading. It was pissing me off with all of the wrong or left out info. First they said that Luigi was introduced in Super Mario Bros. on the NES. Second they misled you by leaving out info about the NES and said that Super Mario Bros. was the pack in game for the NES, but how they said it would make you think that it was the origional pack in game. They did the same thing for the Genesis and Sonic. They didn't mention anything about R.O.B. and how he made the NES popular in the first place, not Mario. Sonic wasn't introduced until 1991, 2 years after the Genesis was released. The show went from the Genesis and skipped all the way to the PS1 and then skipped to the PS2, It didn't even mention the SNES, Gameboy, Jaguar, Gamegear, Lynx, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Virtual Boy, Turbographix 16, XBOX, and many other systems.

Yep exactly, they then talked about CD-rom technology stemming from Nintendo and Sony splitting up when designing the Super NES CD-ROM that would eventually become the Playstation. They failed to mention the reason Nintendo was interested in a CD system to begin with was because NEC had great success with such a product in Japan by that time and the release of a Sega add on CD rom was impending for example. Far too much of the program focused on how motion capture works and cinematics and had very little to do with how games actually evolved.

They leave out soooo much information that it leads people to believe things that are wrong. It makes it sound like the Playstation was the first system to use CD's. Like DragonmasterDan (off topic but I like your name Dan, I was just playing Lunar on the Sega CD yesterday, I have lunar 1 and 2 on the Sega CD and PS1) said they talk about Nintendo and Sony teaming up but never even mention why or the SNES that the CD addon was planned for. They go from the Donkey Kong arcade, to NES, to a split second about the SMS, then to the Genesis, and then to the PS1. WTF is that all about. So much info is left out that it really just irritates the piss outa me. The only reason that I continue to watch the show is to see how much info they get wrong or just leave out.

I just thought of another very irritating thing that was mentioned. One guy said that when the NES came out, Atari abandoned the 2600 and 7800 and called it quits. Last time I check the 7800 wasn't even released until 1986, 1 year after the NES and the 2600 went on into the 90's. Not to mention the Lynx, Jaguar, and Jaguar CD.

It's irritating how much of the time, the games they're showing on screen have nothing to do with the game they're talking about, or on the wrong system.

Also they keep recycling the same random clips of Sinistar and Asteroids and a few others over and over.

Yep, they failed to address Atari's return to the business, also it is worth noting that the 7800 was released in 1984 in small quantities but still. There's practically no mention of the GameBoy which practically revolutionized the industry for example as well.

They showed Virtual Fighter (I can't be sure if it was the Arcade, Saturn or 32X version) on their clips about how the Playstation changed the industry...........

Hey just watch the 3rd episode about 3D games. Find it interesting that one of the first 3D games was on the Atari 8bit called Rescue on Fractalus. The Atari 8bit is a very powerful computer for its time and it now has a place in the history on the development of a 3D game. Now a few have speculated about creating a 3D engine able to do a game like Wolfenstein 3D or Doom. The other 3D innovation Atari contributed is the Arcade BattleZone.
