8th lutz #1 Posted November 22, 2007 http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/sony-exe...on-phone-again/ The rumors that Sony Computer Entertainment – the PlayStation folks to you or I – and Sony Ericsson – those are the cellphone folks – are teaming up to make a PlayStation phone are just as "seductive" today as they were back then. This time, it's SCE co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan giving India's Economic Times the following rather noncomittal tease: "The PlayStation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible." We would say it's as plausible now as it was last year when they first teased it ... or in June when Sony Ericsson filed for that PSP-esque gaming phone patent ... or in August when Sony Ericsson said they were "obviously" looking at a PlayStation-branded phone (just not this one). Regardless of how "seductive" the premise is to Sony, Ryan told the Times "it could be a while before a commercial launch of such a device happens... ." So, we'll see you same time next year then, PSP phone rumors?
Gabriel #2 Posted November 22, 2007 If so, they really need to go for something akin to a high end Blackberry style device rather than a simple phone like the N-Gage was.
godslabrat #3 Posted November 22, 2007 This is nothing against Sony in particular, but someone needs to tell these phone makers that for every iPhone, there's an N-Gage. The competition in the cell phone market is nasty, and if you don't get it right, it's easy for customers to pass you by on the way to the Next Cool Phone. And, to be quite honest, Sony hasn't exactly been firing on all thrusters lately. I wouldn't write the project off just yet, but I can't help but wonder if their resources would be better spent elsewhere.
ls650 #4 Posted November 23, 2007 It'd be a heck of a gamble. I love my PSP, but every new feature they add to it raises the retail price. One of the reasons the DS sells in larger numbers is that it's a heck of a lot cheaper!
Atari5200 #5 Posted November 23, 2007 It'd be a heck of a gamble. I love my PSP, but every new feature they add to it raises the retail price. One of the reasons the DS sells in larger numbers is that it's a heck of a lot cheaper! what??? every new feature they add to it raises the retail price? It has? I believe the Slim is cheaper than the original when it launched, what other features are you talking about because every where I go, the PSP is cheaper now than it ever has, not more expensive. The DS is cheap because it has always been cheap and will always be cheap and has no where near the functionality the PSP has, you pay for what you get for. I for one prefer the Ferrari over the Chevy.
8th lutz #6 Posted November 23, 2007 sony has denied this today. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/sony-den...on-phone-again/ Sony come forward with a denial (via CVG). "Jim Ryan was in fact misquoted by the Economic Times of India about this issue," according to a company spokesperson. "We do have talks with other arms of the Sony family about various topics but I can confirm we are not currently working together on the creation of a PlayStation Phone." ls650 #8 Posted November 24, 2007 what??? every new feature they add to it raises the retail price? It has? Yes, it has. Compare a PSP with a DS. Why is it more expensive? Because it has more features. If they add phone to it, that's just another feature to pay for. Of course, over the last couple of years the PSP has come down - precisely because they haven't added anything substantial to it. And the price has come down on the DS as well - for precisely the same reason.
