For the record...Rock Band is awesome

Yours is the first positive review I've seen. So far all the people I've talked to say it's like a sub par Guitar Hero with some drums thrown in.

Then you haven't been looking at many reviews, as most of them are overwhelmingly positive so far:

Yes, I agree. The game is fantastic! It has the best setlist when compared to Guitar Hero I, II, III and 80s. While I don't really like all of the songs, I think pretty much all of them are fantastically fun to play, guitar-wise. And I happen to like this guitar better than any of the Guitar Hero guitars. I like the solo twist in this game, much better than the addition of the battle crap in Guitar Hero III.

I played the drums just a bit and they're pretty tough, IMO. I hope to have the chance to get back to those on Sunday. I want to see how they pan out when I play them seriously.

The singing is pretty decent. The problem is that I don't know quite a few of the songs well enough. I need to get to Run to the Hills!

I love Guitar Hero, but I love Rock Band equally, as well.

The guitar is much easier on Rock Band...I'll give you that. But the guitar is still fun if you turn up the difficulty, and the drums are really fun even on the easiest difficulty. The singing is even pretty cool.

I would imagine that playing solo might not be as cool, we had 4 people, one for each part, and it was a ton of fun :)

The guitar controller is much better imho, and the drums seem to really take a beating. I was pounding the shit out of them

The guitar controller sems a bit flimsier compared to the GH controllers. My roomie tried to play the demo with the guitar, and he couldn't even pass something on easy. Plus.. two sets of buttons? *confused*

I have heard that the drums and guitar where very flimsy and have been breaking on people dont know if this is true or not but this is what i have heard.

The guitar is not of the quality of the Guitar Hero guitars (especially the new wireless 360 one.) I do not like the way the strumbar works. It does not click at all and there isn't as much range of motion on it as the Guitar Hero guitars. When you play guitar with a pick there is feedback from the strings (consider that you are slamming a piece of plastic into metal strings.) The Rock Band guitar misses that. The one thing that I will say is good about the Rock Band guitar is that it feels more like a real guitar when holding it.

I was impressed with the drums. They seem to be well made. I can't help but play them like I would a real set so I hit them pretty hard and I didn't have any problems. The only problem I had with the drums was in the foot pedal. There is no feedback from the pedal. You just press and release. If you rest the heel of your foot on the ground then the front of the pedal tends to come off the ground which can make playing difficult. Sometimes I would press it and it wouldn't respond (mostly when I was having to do it quickly over and over as you would playing on hard difficulty.)

Rock band is definitly awesome. I am about 30 + songs into on expert and the guitar work is getting much more challenging. While not up to the hardest songs of guitar Hero I don't believe it should be this is Rock Band...not Guitar Hero 4. Everyone can't be going balls out soloing and riffing at the same time. Sometimes you have to play it nice and easy and let the drummer have his turn or the singer do his thing. I think it works great and its a total blast to play with a group of friends and the online multiplayer seems to work decently. People complaning about the instruments are asking to much or nit picking for the $170 price tag. Subtract the cost of a game $50-$60 and you are getting 3 quality controllers and a USB hub for around $100-$120. Basically I beleive the price vs. quality is spot on. Affordable, playable, and enjoyable. I'll take the Strat over the orginal Guitar Hero controllers for PS2 anyday now that I have played with it for a little while.

I have to wait until Christmas to open my Rock Band. Wife got it for me...although, I bet she caves in first. She can't wait to play this! I'm totally looking at Rock Band as to have friends over for a 4 player jam session.

As far as I can tell, the drums are built like tanks. I was pounding the crap out of them and haven't put a scratch on them yet.

I like the feel of the guitar. Feels sturdier than the wired 360 guitar, but maybe not as tough as the wireless one.

I seen the demo of making your band members, but what about making a band name? Can you make your own name up? And can you make your logo thing? (if there is such a thing)

You can definitly make your own band name. It also says you can make your own logo but I have not tried yet as I've been busy working through the songs- unlocking them all.

Has anyone tried singing and playing at the same time? I can do fairly well on the songs I know already. Epic, Say it ain't so, In bloom. Some of the easier ones.
