+Cafeman #1 Posted November 24, 2007 I recently decided to pick up the Sonic Gems collection (GCN) and I was a bit amazed at what high quality is contained in the 1990's SEGA model-2 port, Sonic Fighters. It appears based on the VF2/Fighting Vipers engine and is quite amazing for its day! The backgrounds and animations are comical and simply nice to look at. For example, in one level you fight on a boat travelling down the river with the Sonic The HEdgehog level 1 mountains and levels at the side of the river in the background. The moves are a bit deeper than I had expected because I played Fighters MegaMix quite a bit, and some of the gag extra characters in that game such as Bean and others had a more simplified move set than whats in Sonic Fighters. All in all, its a fun little game and reminds me of the first couple times playing Sonic and Sonic 2. Anybody else enjoy this game? I also thought I'd mention that Caf Jr and I have been playing NiGHTS into Dreams on Sega Saturn. Tonight Caf Jr blew away one of my high scores on the Frozen bell level. He got a 120-link chain!!! I still have never broken 50 or so links; it was amazing to watch. I have been getting in the 200K's for most levels, but Caf Jr got like 250K for Frozen bell -- he beat Reala so fast (the Boss round) that he earned 1.9 bonus mulitiplier. I've been trying to find and re-discover how to chain together links but I'm having a hard time on some levels. I know it is possible to have infinites in some places if you are skilled and fast enough .. which doesn't (yet?) describe me. Can't wait for Nights 2: Journey into Dreams. Hope it still is coming out Dec 18 and not pushed back.
Ross PK #2 Posted November 24, 2007 Yes, I think Sonic Fighters is a fun game too.
Christophero Sly #3 Posted November 24, 2007 I'm planning to pick up both the Gems and Mega collection. Sonic Fighters sounds like an interesting game. While we're on the subject, I have a question. Do the early Sonic games (1,2, etc.) found on these compilations allow you to save your game or is it just like playing them on a Genesis?
kevincal #4 Posted November 25, 2007 I have Sonic Mega Collection on the Gamecube, and you can't save your progress for Sonic 1 or 2, but you can for 3. Go figure... Even though I know you could save 3 on the Genesis as well, but not 1 & 2. But they shouldn't have been so obsessed with keeping the games original to the point of leaving out save features for Sonic 1 and 2. Even though it should only take a couple of hours to beat either of those games from start to finish...

+Cafeman #6 Posted November 25, 2007 Caf Jr and I are becoming much better at Frozen Bell. Tonight he earned a score a bit over 300K! And also tonight, although my score was lower because I totally messed up the boss, I discovered the stage-1 infinite links path! Got 151 links and only quit because time was running out. That is my personal best ... I scored 81K on Mare 1 alone. So I think it is feasible I can beat 300K too. I checked out scoreattack.com (.net?) and saw that some gamers claim scores of 600K and higher on some stages .. amazing! Nobody else here ever devote some time to mastering NiGHTS? kevincal #7 Posted November 25, 2007 I couldn't get into Nights for whatever reason... Seemed way too linear. Fly through rings and..............? lol. You can do that in Mario 64, and about 100 other things too.
+Cafeman #8 Posted November 25, 2007 It's not the flying thru the rings, but more like "can you fly thru another before 1 second elapses?". To each their own.

SINGLE TOOTH #11 Posted November 25, 2007 Is the Sonic Fighters on there, the Saturn Version? I'm starting get get kinda mad, the Saturn had all these cool Sonic games that all get canceled. Then the only Sonic game is that 3D blast game which sucks.......
Ross PK #12 Posted November 25, 2007 (edited) Sonic Fighters is on Sonic Gems and I'm sure it's the arcade version. A lot of people say that Sonic 3D blast sucks, but I actually enjoy it. Maybe I wouldn't have liked it if I had discovered it back in the day, but I only discovered it when I got the Sonic compilation about a year ago, I think it's enjoyable and something different. I can't get pass the boss though where there's all that fire or lava or something, it seems impossibly hard. The games that I'm really not to keen on are the Game Gear ones, I get completely stuck early on in most of them, and, I dunno, I just don't get any enjoyment out of them for some reason. Atariboy #13 Posted November 26, 2007 The PS2 and Xbox versions of Sonic Mega Collection Plus have save states available for every game, whats in Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube is just the original saving ability (Or lack of one in most of the titles). kevincal #14 Posted November 26, 2007 Sonic 3d Blast was quite boring to me. Actually, every Sonic after Sonic and Knuckles was quite boring to me.
+Cafeman #15 Posted November 26, 2007 I think nobody really wanted Sonic 3D Blast back in the day, but if you give it a try you will find its not a bad game. It just is not up to par with the classic 2D Sonics. On the Saturn, Sonic 3D Blast has 2 features which greatly elevate it over the Genesis version IMHO: (1) the graphics of course -- very similar to the Genesis version except for the very nice weather FX which are very nice looking; and (2) the bonus rounds. They are different on Saturn from the Genesis version -- imagine Sonic 2's halfpipe re-imagined in true polygonal 3D, with a fun BG music score. Great fun and great nostaliga -- the bonus rounds *really* get the Sonic feel felt in the first 2 games.

Avid Fan #18 Posted November 26, 2007 The gamecube version came out like a good 2 years before the X-box and PS2 versions. Thats why
kevincal #19 Posted November 26, 2007 Yep, and it doesn't have the Game Gear Sonics like the Sonic Mega Collections on PS2 and XBOX have... O well. I also hate how you have to unlock the hidden games...

Ross PK #23 Posted November 28, 2007 Sucks doesn't it? I can't play the original Katamari Damacy, and I probably wont be able to play the remake of Nights for the PS2 since I'm in the UK.
liveinabin #24 Posted November 28, 2007 Not wishing to derail the thread, but Ross PK, you absolutely MUST play the original Katamari. I'm in UK and I've got it. If you have a newer flip-lid PS2 you can buy a disc and widgets (to make the PS2 think the lid is always closed) combination that lets you play whatever without invalidating your PS2 warranty. Worth it for Katamari 1 alone. The whole kit is about £20 or so. It's called Magic Disk I think. I can find it if you want. As for Nights, I'd still recommend getting a Saturn to play it (rather than the PS2 version) as it just has that lovely Sega feel if you play it on the 'Nights' pad (the Saturn's analog pad, released alongside the game) on the original (awesome) console. And then you can get (v. cheaply) a copy of the beautiful 'Christmas Nights', basically a Christmas themed (based on the Saturn's internal clock) mini-serving of Nights (with unlockable presents). Ross PK #25 Posted November 28, 2007 Yeah, I have a new slimline PS2 now. I have been thinking of buying that thing for it but I haven't got around to it yet.
