Just got a 7800 and need some advice on power switch

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I just pick up a working 7800 system minus the pads in the UK for £1 and I found out that the power button is dodgy on it, as I find it easiest to turn it on with the top off and press the edges of the buttons or hard in the middle. I put a bit of insulation tape on the button which you press press from outside and it makes a better contact, just got to hold it down for a few secs to turn on and off.

All works otherwise perfectly and I can now finally play Planet smashers and BallBlazers. Can anyone give me some advice on ways to get the power button working better and here in the UK as sometimes we get trouble getting replacement parts.

Thanks.

Anthony

Bargain price!

The switch push bit is not actually the actual working bit of the switch, it is just a plastic rod that pushes the actual switch on the mother board.

Suggest that you open it up and see if anything is broken, the actual switch looks like a pretty standard PCB mount, probably available from Maplin

Thanks for that, you mean open the switch or the 7800. As I opened up the 7800 and see the button-type switch and have actually had better results with using the part soldered to the motherboard than the actual power button. How do I open the switch to clean the contacts. Thanks.

Sorry I meant to take the top off the 7800, I don't think the switches can be taken apart.

May be worth just going over the joints with a bit of new solder

When mine gets finicky I usually just give the swich a bit of a workout, power off of course, usually clears it up. If it real bat, you can cut the rubber bit a little or use a hypodermic needle (if you got one around) and try and get some alcohol or other solvent in there to clean it, then give it a workout. I personally haven't done that ever though.
