The first game that allowed continues

Recommended Posts

While testing and boxing a few dupes that I was selling, I found myself playing Vanguard quite a bit over the weekend. I must say it is an awesome game and loads of fun.

What was really cool is after my game was over it allowed me to continue. My question is, what was the first 2600 that allowed continuing after the game was over?

Adventure? If you reset without winning first, you and any dead dragons revive, and you are returned to the front of the yellow castle, but all objects remain where you left them (except as moved by the bat, of course).

Its documented in the manual as 'reincarnation.' It does let you resume the game you died on, so I'd count it as a continue.

So in this game, you don't get to keep your score, but you do get to restart the last section that you reached. I wonder how many Atari 2600 games had multiple sections where you'd be able to continue? For other games, it wouldn't be that hard to let you keep your score, so I wonder if any did?

As long as you keep getting E.T. back to his ship, your score continues from game to game. That's not exactly the same thing, but it's a version of continuing.

I love it. Another E.T. plug. I think I'll just get a closet full and hand out this X-mas. :rolling:

I'm not sure you can 'continue' putting a pic in that signature :(
