Inky #1 Posted July 30, 2002 I fired up steem last night, and while I am extremely impressed with the emulation, the one thing that I can never ever get over on the ST is the horrid horrid sound. The stupid music from that machine keeps haunting me. It sounds lke you are in a Chineese restaraunt! The music on Xenon (one of my favorite games) BING BING BING BING BING bingbingbingbing GRRR!!! I think that's why I give the Atari 8 bit computers the gaming edge.
Albert #2 Posted July 30, 2002 Games that use digitized sound effects (or music) generally sound pretty good on the ST (Dungeon Master!), but the built-in waveform generators on that Yamaha sound chip just sound cheesy. I bet the part was very inexpensive, which is probably why Atari went with it. But that's just speculation on my part. While the 8-bits can't really do digitized sound well (yes, I've heard some demos, but that's it), there are some great examples of awesome music and sound effects. For instance, the music in Alternate Reality. Or the sound when your engines fire up while in the docking bay at the start of Rescue on Fractalus. And many more. ..Al
