GreenDayRlz #1 Posted December 19, 2007 How do you get the black crud off of NES game connectors?! I`ve tried everything, tarn-x, alchlohol, I MEAN EVERYTHING.

Try an eraser, you may want to use those hexnut screwdriver heads to take the carts apart and clean the contacts out from both sides thoroughly. Some games just can't be restored. SRGilbert #3 Posted December 19, 2007 If the contacts are really bad, I've had good luck with the metal polish that is sold under the Dremel brand. It's pretty much a jewlers rouge, and used with one of the felt polishers that fit the Dremil, should take it right off. Just be slow and gentle, or you could grind the contact right off! Of course, you really need to take the PCB out of the case for this.
Cinder6 #4 Posted December 19, 2007 I've also seen people suggest using steel wool for the really horrible black spots that won't come out with anything else. I'd really put it in the "last resort" pile, as I can't imagine it's the best thing in the world for the contacts (after prolonged applications, that is). In general, you go up the ladder when cleaning games. Start with the eraser and rubbing alcohol, and move up from there. That'll take care of 99.7% of your problems. GreenDayRlz #5 Posted December 19, 2007 Ok, I know how to get the cart apart lol. Ok, I`ll try the jewelery cleaner, which 2 me is the same as tarn-X. I also want to see if I can plate my connections with lead 2 make them better for my "NES Cleaner Cart", Which It going 2 be a SMB or some other esy 2 find game that I either HACK and just cut a pin to make it not work or blank the roms, I`m only 13 so I`ll try cutting a pin. I have to get the connector PERFECT on the cart. I also will try to secretly make a label. It`s just for fun though. When I get y own computer and move out, I`ll probably try to write a program in the rom to have the cart have the instructions in the cart, or on the label like I want. Well, thanks. The only problem I have right now is The only cart I took the label off if a 3 game pach, (SMB, DH,ECT) And will be tricky to find what pin to cut, so I guess it`s my "DESIGNATED PROTOTYPE" Well, thanks, Greendayrlz ONE QUESTION-On what pin is ground for the PRG ROM? Cinder6 #6 Posted December 19, 2007 I also want to see if I can plate my connections with lead 2 make them better for my "NES Cleaner Cart", Wait, what? Why? Lead is many things, but a good conductor, it is not. Unless I'm totally missing the point in plating the connectors...
ApolloBoy #7 Posted December 20, 2007 I also want to see if I can plate my connections with lead 2 make them better for my "NES Cleaner Cart", What does plating the cart leads have to do with a cleaning kit? That makes no sense.
SRGilbert #8 Posted December 20, 2007 Ok, I`ll try the jewelery cleaner, which 2 me is the same as tarn-X. Well, Tarn-x is a pretty harsh chemical that is meant for cleaning silver and copper, but I don't think it would be a good choice for electrical connectors. The Dremel stuff I mentioned is a very mild abrasive that will remove the actual crust that can form on the contacts. I've had some that were green and crusty! Cinder6 #9 Posted December 20, 2007 What does plating the cart leads have to do with a cleaning kit? That makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that lead is a horrible conductor.
GreenDayRlz #10 Posted December 21, 2007 I want to plate them not 4 a game, but I`m trying 2 make a "NES Cleaner Cart", where you put it in, take it oup, and whipe the connector w/ a Q-Tip, (Home made label on the cart) But anyway the stuff is black, I`ll try some more stuff later. My dad cleaned one of my games about 3 months ago with some white stuff, and got a power tool w/ a homemade eraser end and after he was done, the connector was soooooo clean, It looked white. The best eraser 4 cleaning games in a pen/Pencil one, with the gray and white, I`ve used them on all my games b4 my NES bit went bad. First gray, to get it clean, then white side to get it shinyer and get the little bit rest off. GDR.

GreenDayRlz #12 Posted December 23, 2007 LOL, It`s just something I would like 2 do...I don`t really know Y. I would also like 2 re program the roms, Right now I have these 2 game carts cleaned-No labels, water-resistant(Thank you Goo-Gone!), and lemony scent-(Yet again, TY Goo-Gone!) But I only did it with 2 games SMB/WCTM/DH cart(How dumb can I get?) And a SMB. Hmm...... I was browsing Google, and I found THIS- http://reviews.ebay.com/The-SECRET-to-Clea...000000001205863 Hmmm...7,000 games, I think I will try it. I hope It gets that crap off- I don`t have the stuff U told me about guys... I hope I can get 2 wal mart soon...
ApolloBoy #13 Posted December 23, 2007 I would also like 2 re program the roms, That is impossible. You can only reprogram EPROMs, not ROMs. Once something's been written onto a ROM chip, it can't be overwritten or erased.
GreenDayRlz #14 Posted December 23, 2007 Well, EPROMS. I forgot to say that specifically. Is there proms? I would like proms better because they work in more places, like space-Eprom, not so much, they get erased. You never know where there gona go... So what do you think about it?
ApolloBoy #15 Posted December 23, 2007 (edited) Well, EPROMS. All NES games except for homebrews and reproductions use ROMs. So, what is it you're trying to do here? Edited December 23, 2007 by ApolloBoy
GreenDayRlz #16 Posted December 24, 2007 Just program some Eproms(WAY LATER-5 YEARS), make a label, cut conections, connectors with lead, make label, have a designated cleaner cart with solution mix(LINK ON TOP SOME)

No offense, but your plans make absolutely no sense.
GreenDayRlz #20 Posted December 24, 2007 LOL 2. It`s just something to do, have a home-Brew NES Cleaner Cart(Dun Dun Duhhhh) Thank a deck tester(WAY in the future) With just a SMB game board. That`s a challenge. Programing school here I come. Some 1 I know went 2 1, they re programmed missile command 4 the 2600. (When I said cut connections, I ment 1 or 2 to make the not work, untill I make some ROMs) I`m only 13... And w/out a 300$ NES label laminating printer....I`ll goto dollar general 2 morrow lol.
