Lord Helmet #1 Posted December 21, 2007 Not as good as it could have been...not as bad as I expected... Enjoy: http://hotsalsaweb.blogspot.com/2007/12/xb...ew-tempest.html
Atari5200 #2 Posted December 21, 2007 (edited) i guess I would have to ask this question. For controls only, compared to Tempest 2000 with the Jag stock controller, how do the controls compare? I don't understand how a game without the all mighty spinner is touted as one of the best games for the Jaguar, and probably one of the best games ever made without the spinner, but yet Tempest for the 360 comes out and its all about the spinner. So I want to know, compared to Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar, how do the controls stack up? Edited December 21, 2007 by Atari5200

Lord Helmet #4 Posted December 21, 2007 i guess I would have to ask this question. For controls only, compared to Tempest 2000 with the Jag stock controller, how do the controls compare? So I want to know, compared to Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar, how do the controls stack up? I would say its about the same, only you get analog control. Really its not bad at all IMHO, it just isn't as good as the arcade game, which is what this game is trying to be. Honesty I think its fun and I had no problem spending the points, which was not the case with Asteroids. That was a waste.
Red 5 #5 Posted December 21, 2007 (edited) I only played classic version so far. (I downloaded it late last night.) I played 4 or 5 times and was ranked 11th in the world. I guess everyone is playing the updated version? I play the arcade version (on my MAME cab) all the time. This version is slower and easier. It is also harder. Slower and easier to compensate for the fact that you can't 'spin' anywhere near as fast as you can on the arcade version. This makes it all but impossible to get passed some levels without losing a ship (red levels). My biggest complaint is that for larger levels (like the flat level 11) you can't see the edges of the playfield. That makes no sense to me at all. Anyway, I got to the red levels after a few tries and noticed 'Beets' (me) was ranked #11 in the world. Yeeha? I am looking forward to trying the enhanced version tonight. (oh... and I got zero achievement points! The all seem to ONLY be for the enhanced version of the game.) Atari5200 #6 Posted December 21, 2007 well if the controls are as good as the Jag version, i'm sold.
Gabriel #7 Posted December 22, 2007 I'm still on the fence regarding this one. I don't know if I should take the plunge or not. I think I need to follow my old rule of "if you have to think that much about whether you want it, you probably don't." I agree that the classic mode shouldn't be held too much against the game. Considering none of these are arcade emulations, or even well done recreations, the Evolved modes should really be the only true consideration.
Shannon #8 Posted December 23, 2007 I dunno. I have not been too impressed with Atari's "Live" releases. I prefer the anthology they released for the Xbox. Luckily it is one of the backward compatible titles.
Mendon #9 Posted December 23, 2007 Well, I DL'd the free trial.... sheesh, never played a 60sec demo before.... wasn't impressed and will pass on it. Mendon
+Lynxer2007 #10 Posted December 27, 2007 I'll definitely be downloading it. I love Tempest and want it on every console possible. Tempest 2000 is still the best.
Flojomojo #11 Posted January 3, 2008 I'm still on the fence regarding this one. I don't know if I should take the plunge or not. I think I need to follow my old rule of "if you have to think that much about whether you want it, you probably don't." That's a good rule, but spending $5 is hardly "taking the plunge," is it? This version of Tempest is also on the $20 "Atari Classics Evolved" collection on the PSP, along with 10 other arcade ports/remakes and more than 50 (locked up tight) VCS games. One could argue that the disc is a better value. I want to like it, but I don't, just like the other "evolved" ports. Centipede/Millipede has some neat particle effects, but they're just way too busy in Asteroids. Why can't we resize the view to get in tighter? Missile Command looks nice, but they changed the missiles to lightning for some crazy reason, ruining the now-classic aesthetic. Why? Stainless's treatment of these games have been sub-par in my opinion, especially when Atari Anthology (PS2, XBOX, both playable on their newer counterparts) nailed it with 1080i graphics and not locking up the disc's best features. No. But it sounds better than "lightly sprinkling myself with tiny amounts of water." I did eventually end up getting this one. In the scheme of XBox Live Arcade games, it's bad. But it's bad in the same way Rally X is. It's just not all that great, but it does grow on you. It's worth playing for short bits.
+HammR25 #13 Posted January 4, 2008 I think I'll go buy this and Frogger just to piss off Mr. Space Giraffe. I've already got Tempest on an Atari Xbox game so I don't really need it. Spite would be the only reason to download this version. I think I like Tempest on my PC the best. I got it along time ago with Microsoft Home Essentials. I think Albert sent me a copy too with a PC Atari Anthology disc when I bought Beef Drop for the 7800.
