Just got a 2600 hooked up again

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Just thought I'd mention that I just got a 2600 hooked up after Christmas this year. I had been an Atari collector and enthusiast for quite some time since the 2600 days. I had during my "Atari career" numerous 2600s, a 7800, a Lynx I, a Jaguar and CD unit, a 600XL, 800XL, XEGS, STe, TT030 and Falcon. I even wrote for a couple Atari publications. After some time I felt that I had finally "gotten over" my Atari addiction. I hadn't played my Atari systems in well over a year and I had happily moved onto Macs. I had sold everything on eBay,

Well, a couple years later, here I am discovering Atari Age and getting the bug again, full force. I love the Gamecube I have and the N64 (great games to play with the wife) but I really had the urge to play Atari again. My wife had her childhood 2600 with some games but no way to connect it to the television. We had a Flashback 2 which was cool, but I really wanted to play some more games. Well, my wife got me a television adapter from Atari Age and a big box of games from eBay for Christmas. I have been happily playing some old 2600 games on an old woodgrain Atari again.

I also went to my local Bull Moose Music store (they are a CD/Movie/games store) in Maine and bought out a bunch of their 2600 games (Star Master, Amidar, Circus Atari being just a few of their $3.00 Atari games). I am really having fun with the Atari again. I crave a 7800 again (I am scouring eBay at the moment) but I am really digging the 2600 again including some games I never had. Mouse Trap? Very cool! Amidar is a blast. And Solaris is just amazing. I really love that game but have little hope of ever beating it - it becomes tough quick! I have to look up some manuals and figure out what is happening in some games (what the heck is Sneak n' Peak or Riddle of the Sphinx about?)

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and say that the enthusiasm and camaraderie here is really contagious. It has been a really fun place to hang out. Regardless of the lulls that happen in the future, I will not be selling any Atari stuff in the future and hanging onto it.

And, yes, I will give E.T. a chance ;-).

Welcome to AtariAge, and welcome to reliving the great system!

I'm sure you can poke around and get more common games at the marketplace. Also, don't be afraid to get the homebrews. 99% are amazing, can't go wrong with any of them.

Welcome again!

Thanks, Keilbaca, I was actually thinking that I at least had to get Squish 'Em. I played one of the last binaries and it is a great game! I was also thinking that I need to spend $100 to get a copy of Stella's Stocking ;-). Bee Ball also looks great but I haven't tried that yet. Colony 7 was fun too. The homebrew stuff is amazing. And if I do get a 7800... well, the Q-bet clone will be mine. I don't think I will have any trouble getting to the free copy of Stella. Telling my wife about it might be a different story ;-).

Get Medieval Mayhem if you've got paddles and are a Warlords fan, or even if you aren't. One of the best Atari games ever, IMHO.

I was thinking that Medieval Mayhem looked great - thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, our paddles seem to be shot. I am going to try to clean them, though, so hopefully :-). Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely look into it. I have Warlords, but haven't tried it yet. I am going to enlist the wife.

Sneak 'n Peek...no joke... a hide and go seek game.

Seriously, the person counting in the game has to divert their eyes from the game so player 2 can go hide.

Interesting... I will have to get the wife to participate. And my comment about giving E.T. a chance was in part an homage to you and your videos. I will give it a fair chance., honestly. Keep up the good work on your videos!

Nothing like having a working 2600 in the house in the year 2007... soon to be 2008. Having the hardware up and running is half the fun for me. Enjoy!

Make sure you check out some of the homebrews and hacks, the stuff for sale in the store here. There's some great games to augment the classics. Lady Bug is a must.

Lady Bug does look great... man, there are a lot of must-have homebrews when you come to the party this late :). Thanks, Brian. I will pick all these up eventually and am keeping track of all the suggestions.

Haha, you should see my list of "MUST BUY" games thanks to these folks. I haven't cleared away half of it, and it's not a fraction of what's out there.

You're not kidding. I only bought star fire and test cart (for the atari 2600 mods), and I still want to buy a lot more homebrews. I will eventually buy medieval mayhem, as I am in the hidden credits :) I helped give him ideas for the menu, and some of the gameplay.

My recommended list matches the ones I own. I haven't regretted spending money on any of them. For most, roms are available, and you can try 'em before you buy 'em to be sure.

Lady Bug - near perfection conversion of the arcade game.

Sea Wolf - great submarine shooting game. Would have been a runaway hit back in the day. Great graphics, sound and game play.

Go Fish - a very different, unique game where you start as a small fish and get bigger as you eat other fish that are the same size or smaller. Very good music.

Fall Down - a simple game that excels at gameplay. Very frantic, a great pick-up-and-play game. Gotta think two player would be lots of fun, but one player is very enjoyable with the 2600 being a skilled yet fair opponent.

Thanks for the suggestions, Brian. I have heard great things about Lady Bug and Fall Down. I have to admit that I never saw the arcade version of Lady Bug so I have no memories of that game. But I love PacMan and Mouse Trap so I think I would like it. The screenshots are nice.

At the moment, I am leaning toward the following games - Squish 'em (Love it!), Lady Bug, Colony 7, Bee Ball, Fall Down, and Thrust+.

My sister and I played this back when we were kids... a great and often overlooked game!

Great to see another collector rediscovering the greatest system ever. I recommend the following link http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...&hl=top+100 it's the top 100 titles for the 2600 as voted on by the people here at atariage. I haven't posted my own vote just yet. It becomes difficult when you realize your top 10 is more like a top 50! Anyway, I personally feel that you haven't lived if you haven't played at least the top 20.
