Need help naming this game (text/graphic adventure, 1983)

Recommended Posts

Sorry in advance for the vague description, but I'm working with 20 year old memories at this point.

There was a game advertised in the November 1983 issue of Compute! - it was a full page ad with an attractive woman and a caption along the lines of "Would you risk everything to save her?" The game itself was (as far as I can remember) an text/graphics adventure game along the lines of the old Penguin/Sierra adventures with a few lines of text and vector based graphics taking up the remainder of the screen. One of the screenshots had some kind of lion-thing sitting on a throne. I'm pretty sure it was advertised as being available for the Atari 800, but it may have been an Apple II game as well. I've scoured mobygames, without any luck.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

I actually have the Nov 1983 issue, so I looked through it...

I think you're looking for "Gwendolyn", by Artworx. The ad is on page 103, color photo of a cute girl dressed as a medieval princess, in a jail cell, with some candles. The tagline reads "Gwendolyn: There are some things you keep searching for, beyond reason", and there are screenshots, including what could be a lion on a throne (well, a purple thing with a green head). The ad says "Atari, 40K disk, $27.95", no mention of an Apple version.

I haven't got a scanner... but if it'd help, I could try to take a picture of the ad with my crappy little digital camera.

The "Would you risk anything to save her?" isn't there... but it sounds familiar to me. Maybe it was a different ad for the same game, in a different issue of the magazine?

That's it! Thanks Urchlay... I appreciate it :)

Looks like there's a copy of the ad in question here:
