Gabriel #1 Posted January 4, 2008 At least a few people wanted me to attempt a review of Soul Calibur Legends. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. I don't know if I can survive this. It's bad. I thought I had seen some vile games recently thanks to the DS, but they ain't shit compared to this one. This one is THE SHIT, and I don't mean that in the vernacular sense. It is shit of such caliber that other shit aspires to be as shitty as it. It is the very archetype of shit, the prototypical shit from which other shit is formed from chaos. If you had dog turd in your left hand, and Soul Calibur Legends in your right hand, your right hand would have a lot more shit in it, but your left hand would be holding more value. I'm not going to make it folks. This waggler has sapped my will to live. I'm returning the rental as soon as I can.
Mendon #2 Posted January 4, 2008 I don't know.... but it sure seems that developers are really throwing a LOT of trash out on the Wii system. To me it seems almost like many of these developers are putting out anything for the Wii, regardless of quality, just to raise some quick cash to use for the development of titles for other systems. I'm not trying to rag on the Wii or say there are no good games for the Wii, because there are some really good games. But sheesh, some of these developers just seem lazier than hell and put some kind of half-ass effort into many releases. I often wonder if these developers even play the games before they release them and see how hit- and-miss the controls are or whether the gameplay really works or not. And its just not the 3rd party developers either. Nintendo itself has released some titles that I believe could have used some work: Donkey Kong Blast with its terrible control scheme, Pokemon Battle that isn't anywhere near as full a game as the N64 or GC games were, and Mario Party that didn't even make use of wide-screen. Just sort of sad that you can see titles like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, Forza, and Timeshift for the 360; Rachett & Clank, Uncharted, Eye of Judgement, Motorstorm and UT3 for the PS3.... all titles that show a lot of quality and hard work went into them. But then you look at the Wii and they throw out junk like Soul Caliber, Crusin, Battle for the Pacific, Bug Island, and Anubis II/Ninjabread Man. Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a rant and take away from your review. Just PO's me that the Wii has potential to be an excellent system but some of these developers don't seem to want to make use of the Wii other than a quick cash cow. Gabriel #3 Posted January 5, 2008 I don't know.... but it sure seems that developers are really throwing a LOT of trash out on the Wii system. Well, not meaning to start anything, but that's really the whole point of the Wii. The whole philosophy regarding the Wii is that the common gamer doesn't care about the quality of a game. Soul Calibur Legends would have been embarrassing on the GameCube even with conventional controls (although conventional controls would have made it merely bad instead of the worthless turd which is is on the Wii). And it's far from the only example. There's stuff like Cruisin', and others. I don't put any faith in professional reviews, but go look at some for Wii titles. I'm glancing at IGN at the moment and its disgusting how many games have been given review scores of 1, 2, and 3 out of 10. It's also quite enlightening to see how many games have scores below the gaming press "average" of 7.0. Only about 25% of the games on the recently reviewed list are good enough to be "average" or better. And IGN has been pretty gung ho Wii for the past year. They rated Soul Calibur Legends as a 6.0. They're definitely being extremely optimistic.
RickHarrisMaine #4 Posted January 5, 2008 I don't think Soul Calibur was ever any better than when it was on the Dreamcast. IMHO of course......
moycon #5 Posted January 6, 2008 I normally don't say "I told you so" but in this case.... http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=106836 Now is the time when the Wii is going to suffer.Your favorite games just aren't going to work with the Wii-mote so in order try and apease you they throw together a game with the characters likeness and slap the name on it. BydoEmpire #6 Posted September 4, 2008 (edited) Reviving an old thread, because I picked this up at GS for < $20, and I'm really enjoying it (about 5 hours in, just hit a major plot twist). Screw the "professional" reviews, the presentation overall is excellent, the graphics and audio are good, the story is fun and entertaining, and for the most part the controls are responsive and add to the game. It doesn't always read horizontal and vertical slashes correctly, but that hasn't caused me to fail at any missions - it's more of a slight annoyance. It's a somewhat repetitive hack & slash set in the SC universe, but they do a lot to keep you playing "one more mission." There is also a "Party Mode," but I haven't had a chance to test it. I did, however, unlock a bunch of scenarios for it while going through the single player game. On the downside, the lock-on system sometimes makes it tricky to target the enemy you want, and there are occasional camera issues, but nothing too serious. If you like the SC characters, and think you might enjoy mowing down skeletons and ninjas with the wiimote, give this game a shot. It's not a triple-A title, but it's well done and worth a discount price. I'd might be disappointed if I paid $50, but I give it a solid B.
