Any Love For Maniac Mansion?

Recommended Posts

Maniac Manision for the NES. Some loved it, some hated it! What is your opinoin on this game? Me....I loved it!

I had heard that there are multiple ways to beat this game with a different ending for each way. I've beat the game with the BOY FRIEND, THE NERD and the SKATER. What are the other endings in this game?

I actually didn't mind the NES version. I originally had the game on my Apple IIe, and remember wasting a lot of time on the game.

But, to answer your question, yes there are multiple ways to beat the game. I always used Michael (the photographer), Bernard (the nerd), and of course Dave---you are pretty much stuck with him.

I'm trying to remember off hand (it's been a while), but I remember using Michael to develop some film, which had some plans on them. I believe I gave those to Weird Ed. That would put Weird Ed on your side.

I would use Bernard to fix the radio and call the meteor police in the radio upstairs on the same floor as Weird Ed. But, if I recall correctly, you had to make sure the dungeon door was to the "Sekret Lab". They would come down and take him away.

I also remember using Wendy (the writer/novelist) to write a manuscript for the meteor and giving it to the meteor. That worked as well.

Other fun stuff to do in the game: try placing the Hamster in the Microwave using Raz. It was my understanding that some versions of Maniac Mansion do not allow you to do this, as Nintendo became very upset when they found out the game was released with this kind of Violence in the game. Remember, Nintendo didn't like blood and guts in their games at that time.

It's really hard to kill your characters, but I know of two ways:

Try giving the blown up Hamster back to Weird Ed. You'll find yourself buried out front by the mailbox!

Go under the house and drain the swimming pool. Then place one of your guys at the bottom of the empty pool. Turn the water back on. You'll drown your character!

This game was very innovative for it's time. If you really liked it, you might check out the Sequal, "Day of the Tentacle" which I believe was only released for the PC and perhaps some other computers. Another agme was Zak McCrakin and the Alien Mindbenders---I never played it, but it looked fun.

I always loved it as a kid, but it didn't make a bit of sense to me. I really don't remember making any progress. It also kind of upset me that there was only one save file. My brother and I were always fighting over it. Well, not really fighting, but one of us would still just have to watch.

I loved Maniac Mansion. Great humor and atmosphere. I always used Michael and Bernard. I tried playing with Jeff (the surfer) one time but never finished that game. I think he can fix the phone or something. I picked up Day of the Tentacle for the Mac back in the day and loved every minute of that too. It has Maniac Mansion as a hidden unlockable but I prefer the NES version (Michael has the best music!). Out of the other LucasArts point'n'click adventures, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Full Throttle are my top three favorites. Sam & Max is funny but the puzzles are way too obscure and nonsensical to be fun.

I remember LucasArts always including all kinds of nifty stuff in the box for the game. I remember for Maniac Mansion, they had a fake newspaper in the box. I kind of wish I would have kept all that stuff when I sold my Apple IIe back in 1994. DOH!

True classic. Redefined the way/interface how to play adventures.

There is a great free remake for PC, updating graphics and sounds to somewhat SVGA standard. I played that through and it was great.

On the NES the colors are a little off, for my taste.

That game kicks ass. It's one of the quirkiest, funniest games of its time. Very imaginative, and a breath of fresh air for anyone who thinks the NES was nothing but platformers. Shame that the point-and-click adventure genre seemed to hit a dead-end shortly afterward. It did spawn an oddball TV show too. The game was so complex, I actually met a girlfriend because of it. Finally, the day has come when playing Nintendo helps you meet girls, not the opposite!

The nes one always kinda bugged me since it begs for mouse control. A good game. I beat it using Bernard and Mike. The VGA remake is cool too, since its free.

I love Maniac Mansion on the C64! IIRC i also played the NES version a few times but i liked the graphics of the C64 version better.

Maniac Mansion Deluxe for the PC is also great!

I just downloaded it from here:

If they ever update this remake, I hope they put a background behind the text so you can read it better. Many times it's too hard to read the words because of the colors in the background.

There are seven endings to the game...one involves killing Dave beforehand, a couple involve the meteor police, a couple involve the book deal, and a couple involve sending the meteor into space.

Microwave water from the pool for another deathtrap.

It's been a while since the last time i played this but as far as i remember i didn't have problems with reading the text. I need to play version 1.4, i still have version 1.1 installed. :ponder:

One of the best games I have ever played. The C-64 version is THE definitive version.....don't settle for the cheap NES imitation.

Let me reiterate that this is one of the best games ever. Quality gameplay.

And try out the sequel, Day of the Tentacle.....it's not quite like the first but it has it's own quirkiness.

I used to keep that newspaper tacked up on a billboard with other stuff.

Glad to see someone else remembers it and not just me. :D
