Is it possible to make a Sega Master System converter for the Genesis?

Recommended Posts

Seeing as the PBC only works with the Genesis 1, I can see how something like this would be quite useful for those of us with Genesis 2's, Nomad's, X'Eye's, LaserActive's, etc... If a Game Genie-sized PBC were available, I'd probably buy one.

http://www.tototek.com has a converter that is cartridge-sized and has support for both master system and Mark III games. You can order it without a case to be sure it fits. There is no card slot and the same compatibility issues seem to apply. Though I'm always amazed at electronics work like this. If you can get a card slot on it, that will really be awesome

I will definitely be doing that on my second converter since I can't seem to find the problem with the broken Master System I got.

I assume you're referring to this? Unfortunately, the bizarre shape of the cartridge means it probably wouldn't fit into my LaserActive anyways (Sonic & Knuckles just barely fits)... not sure about X'Eye, Nomad, etc.

Of course, it could probably be transplanted into a normal cartridge casing... assuming it worked with a North American Genesis in the first place... anyone ever tried that? I don't imagine this adapter would have any region-coding, but you never know.

You acutally can use the pbc on the laseractive, but you must remove the board from the case for it to plug in. A cartridge type adapter would be best though.

Wow, that's nuts. But it's good to know. I've had a PCB design for a converter (no card slot) for a while now, but never sent it in to be manufactured, for many reasons, but mostly because I haven't wanted to play SMS games that badly, on my Laseractive, Nomad, or otherwise. Also I would have to get a 50-pin slot somewhere, and I'm not sure that I want to take apart an old Apple II for it.

A bit of a shot in the dark here... but has anyone ever thought about making a Game Gear adapter for the Genesis?

The problem is that the GG has a different "mode 5" from the Genesis. The only games that would work would be SMS games that were simply slapped in a GG cartridge without any conversion.

Oh wow, I didn't know about this thing before... I may have to pick one of those up. Looks like it should clear the LaserActive cartridge port without much trouble.

I'm back at it again, and am currently in the process of making a second Power Base Converter with both a cartridge and a card slot, but I have a problem. I need to know the pinouts for the Master System's card slot. Anyone have them?
