MrAtari2600 #1 Posted January 11, 2008 This is a short post with not much description because my research cameup blank but i decided to post it here. I was browsing ebay the otherday and found a rebuilt Atari 2600 System It was an original atari but built with new parts. Maybe this guy is full of Sh But I came on here to See! Do they actually actually in 3rd party make Atari replacement parts ? I've seen a few on the website basic ones but i'm curious to know if they do or not. mimo #2 Posted January 11, 2008 It is possible, Best Electrics have loads of parts to fix/re-build a 2600, including fully populated mother boards.
Brian R. #3 Posted January 11, 2008 IIRC, wasn't the reason that it was so easy for other companies to make clones of the 2600 because it was built with "off the shelf" components? Still, I would seriously doubt anyone claiming that they built a 2600 from scratch. Maybe the got a new populated board. That's what I did for a 5200 I found in a trash can. It didn't work so good, but the case was OK, so I bought a new fully populated board. Take out the old one, plop in the new one, and BAM, new 5200. Prodos8 #4 Posted January 11, 2008 They may have thrown a few replacement parts on, cleaned it and are now calling it 'rebuilt'. I don't see why they'd replace anything that was working though. On ebay I imagine the term rebuilt is used quite loosely. The TIA/RIOT, available new from sources like Best, are the only custom ICs, everthing else is off the shelf. wogihao #5 Posted January 11, 2008 hmmm when they say populated board does that include the TIA/cpu and inpuit IO chip? intresting.....
[d2f]Iggy*SJB #6 Posted January 12, 2008 At the gaming store I hit for Atari games, they are selling these new consoles that play NES and SNES games(same console)....so I wouldn't really say a new 2600-clone is too far fetched.
tremoloman2006 #7 Posted January 12, 2008 It is possible, Best Electrics have loads of parts to fix/re-build a 2600, including fully populated mother boards.Right on! I just ordered a replacement motherboard for my faulty 2600A since the individual parts were only $5 less than a brand new one. (NOS) Best Electronics is run my great and friendly people... I can't say enough good things about them.

No, the RIOT (6532) was an off-the-shelf part, and was used in other equipment besides the VCS. The CPU (6507) was also technically off-the-shelf, but I don't know if anything else used it. Only the TIA was a true custom chip. Edited January 13, 2008 by A.J. Franzman

Sheesh if I had known about that, I would have gotten a new Atari Jr board, than throwing away my short rainbow Jr, because I have zero time anymore to fix things, and I needed to downsize. A.J. Franzman #11 Posted January 14, 2008 if I had known about that, I would have gotten a new Atari Jr board, than throwing away my short rainbow Jr Oh come on, there are several people on these forums -- myself included -- who would take a dead console off your hands; no need to send stuff like that to the dump. Even if someone only replaced a motherboard and didn't want to keep the bad one, someone here would take it. Besides, old electronics shouldn't be tossed with regular trash anyway -- due to high lead content, they're considered hazardous waste and should be collected for proper disposal or recycling. I should hang posters with this on it all over town and leave my home address as a dump site. Nah, I would probably just end up with 27,000 toasters and 4 million copies of E.T.
