Anyone have issues with 360 freezing up? Disc reads?

Recommended Posts

It doesn't happen too often but I occasionally get a disk is dirty error or the system may freeze up completely. Also, my 360 is LOUD when reading disks. Anyone ever experience this?

Two of my son's have 360's, one is on his 2nd console and they other is on his 4th console. Both are currently suffering from "Disk Read Error's", "Put this disk in an Xbox 360 Error's", and system freezes. They don't get them on a daily basis but often enough to become frustrating.

As I told both of them, and I'm sorry to post it here, but according to what I've read on the official Xbox360 forums, many others who have suffered from these type of errors either had their drive to take a total dump or the RRoD appeared shortly after they started getting these errors.

Both son's are PO'd at MS for what they consider shoddy design and repairs but both love the games enough to stick with the 360 for the present. Both of them say that if their systems take a dump, they will send them in for repair (if its a free repair, which means it has to be the RRoD since that problem carries a 3yr warranty) and while its in the shop, they will purchase a new Falcon Arcade bundle (they already have hard drive's). Once their system returns from MS, they will either eBay it (most likely) or keep it for a back up.

Hope all works out for you.

I had this happen with Oblivion, upon further inspection, the disc had a hairline crack that I didn't see and it progressively got worse until now it won't boot up at all. Never had an issue with any other games, but was playing Oblivion pretty extensively when it happened. System would just lock up and I'd have to turn it off and back on, or it would go to the screen stating to put in an xbox 360 game into the system.

I never had any DREs. The only time I had lockups was a couple times in Oblivion (game bugs) and right before my original 360 got the RRoD it started flaking out.

As far as noise, yeah the drive can get loud when it spools up to maximum read speed.

Yes, my kids have experienced all the problems mentioned above except the RRoD. Their unit is about a year old now and was trouble free, albeit very noisy, until around four or five months ago. Its very intermittent so the system is still quite usable and they became accustomed to this stuff with their PS2. Although the PS2 was two-three years old before it started acting up.

Good grief, I guess its just the console then. Methinks MS was a little too much in a hurry to release it. I have had the system since just about launch but it seems like its getting a little worse. I had the issue in Oblivion and I cleared the cache out and that helped but lately its been freezing now and then. I have a OXM disc that it wont read at all or maybe like 1 out of 5 times.

I was thinking about calling MS but I may wait a little while longer and just keep clearing the cache out for games and see how it goes. Frustrating.....and annoying.

My first 360 would always freeze up playing PDZ. I tried two different versions of the game and it was odd but both versions would freeze when I played but here's the weird thing. They would freeze at different parts of the game depending on what disk (They were both new) I put in. Like for instance the first disk would always freeze during the training level where you had to clear the boxes out of the way. Never could make it past that area using that disk. The second disk would always freeze on the next level, either if the guards were alerted and all came running, or if I shot an exploding barrel. My thought was there was an issue with the videocard in the system. and if too much was going on it would freeze up. In any case, I sent it back to them ASAP and got a new one.

My system hung when playing Smackdown vs RAW 2007 and I had to make a new save.Seems like it freezes if my internet connection is flaky.I'm trying out PDZ on the 360 and will see if I get the same freezing probs.I am on lvl 1 now so lvl 0 was ok for me.I hear co-op is kool.........................

I got RockBand for Christmas. I played it (tried) twice. Well, 2 nights anyway. It would freeze at various parts of the game. Different each time I tried to play it. Then, the second night, RRoD. Sending it to MS this week.

This is the first time my system had froze while playing a game. Had mine for about a year now....sigh, yeah.

Had my first freeze today after 5-days of owning the Arcade bundle. But me thinks it was an instable network issue.

But the drive can be loud at times. Let´s see how long the Falcon will last (system itself stays quite cool).

Mine's been doing this alot with Forza 2! Not so much the freeze up thing. Mostly the dirty disc message.

I hope my 360 isn't on it's way out.

My 360 came with Forza 2, and I've been playing it quite a bit since I got it. So far, I haven't had any problems with it. Seems kinda strange that buggy game code would cause a physical problem with the hardware. Worst case would seem to be a lock up, and a simple reboot would fix that, right?

As for the 360 being loud when reading a 360 game disc, when the drive runs at full speed, that's just the nature of the beast.

My 360 died again while playing Rock Band the other day (first time was back in June) and now it won't read discs any longer. I called up Microsoft and they said since I bought it 1 year and 2 months ago, regardless that it RRoD'd the first time it died, that I'm out of warranty and I can pay them $99 for repairs. Maybe I'm being stubborn, maybe it's a matter of principle but I'm not shelling out another $100 for a $400 item that has now failed twice. I'm going to attempt to replace the drive with one from fleabay but if all else fails, I'm sure you'll see a stack of games for sale in the Marketplace :/

You do know you can't just swap the drives right? Each drive it tied to it's motherboard with a DVD key. The simplest way around that IMO is the get the exact same drive as you have and swap the circuit boards in them.

You're right - just did a search on that. I had planned on getting the same exact drive model just in case. Wow, that's just incredibly lame.
