Rik #1 Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) ..after buying a game on ebay,or any other auction site, only to later find the same game in the wild for 1/4 of the price you paid online? This weekend i found a mint ColecoVision Monkey Academy, complete with the plastic box, intructions and warrantee card.I paid $7.00 cdn for it at the flea market, where as i paid over $30.00 for it on ebay.I am now going to wait a while longer instead of buying at auction. In my experience, you almost always find that game you want in the wild.I know its pretty knock on wood, but its happened to me MANY times, and i have pretty much all the games i want,so i dont mind waiting now. Vic George 2K3 #2 Posted January 22, 2008 I ended up paying about $40 twice for two copies of the GBA Smurfs game (the copy with the modified Playstation version image on the box front) from two separate eBayers -- one from Australia (which was lucky only because I didn't see the "Ships To Australia" when I blindly clicked on the Pay Now button, but at least the person I contacted was very responsive), and one from somebody in California who was also selling two kid-targeted GBA games with it -- Curious George and Little Einsteins. BTW, the California eBayer is still selling copies of the GBA Smurfs game along with a random kid-targeted GBA game or two, and I have no idea where the heck he even gets them, but so far I haven't had any problems with either copy I purchased. Yeah i know what you mean, this one guy on ebay has an endless supply of this old rare pc game, loose copies, advertised as "BRAND NEW",he's selling.Hes been selling them steady for the past 2 years!I got suspicious, and asked where he gets all those copies, never got an answer, makes me wonder, could be legit, but i play safe, and chose,NOT to buy from this seller again! The last thing i need is to get shafted with counterfeit games. midnight magicman #5 Posted January 22, 2008 yeah, But I always replace the eBay one with the "wild" one (unless the eBay one is in MUCH better condition) just cuz "wild" carts are so much cooler & a greater accomplishment! Peace
christianscott27 #6 Posted January 22, 2008 I wanted a Vectrex so bad that I paid the ebay price, because they never showed up in the wild. The very day it arrived at my house I went out to a flea market and you guessed it - there was a Vectrex. So I bought the Vec for $10 and traded it to a friend for a new SK Multicart. It was a really sweet deal. Since then I've found 6 or so other Vecs, I guess rarity is related to how hard you look.
Atari5200 #7 Posted January 22, 2008 no good games in the wild here either, and the ones there are at the gaming stores are usually the same price as you'd pay on Ebay, except for Genesis games, those all sell for dirt cheap. So my area, it really doesn't make a difference, unless I find a deal at a flea market or garage sale, which is rare, I'm going to pay the same price regardless. I use EBAY for games that I've never seen sold at anywhere, like Lynx, Jag, Neo-geo, etc. I saw and bought my first Neo games in the wild about a month ago, first time seen in the wild through 10 years collecting. Gemini #8 Posted January 22, 2008 Not just games, but controllers too. I bought my NES Advantage for about $20, however, I've recently found places online where you can get them for just $12 or $14, and my local video game store wants to charge me $40. Seriously, $40?! Maybe if it was new in box.
Classic Pac #9 Posted January 22, 2008 This is what amazes me about some gamers, they will shop around when buying say a new car, or a TV, computer..etc. But they will head straight to ebay to buy games. I shop at flea markets, and second hand stores when I look for old games. Also checking out small neighborhood TV repair shops is also a good source. I can say for a fact I have picked up plenty of bargains compared to ebay. Take the game I bout not less than 1 week ago Phantasy Star 2 mint still factory sealed for $8, at one of those neighborhood stores. I can only imagine what I would pay for that same game on ebay. accousticguitar #10 Posted January 22, 2008 $8 might cover shipping. The only games in the wild around here are Genesis sports titles, and a few Nintendos.
Atari5200 #11 Posted January 22, 2008 that makes no sense. you have a million places that sell Cars, Computers, Tv's, etc. but name how many places sell Lynx games? I can tell you in my area = NONE, so you have to go to ebay, you make it sound like all these games are plentiful, they're not, sometimes the only option is to go online. It may take years to find a specific uncommon or rare game in the wild.
joeybastard #12 Posted January 22, 2008 I've been burned by the online overpay a couple of times. I don't buy on ebay too often anymore. I thought the thrifts near me had dried up but on Saturday I decided to take a peek at the local Goodwill. I walked in to a pile of games, nothing over $1.99! There were a ton of PS1 games too but nothing that interested me. I picked up: NES Bigfoot (it's awful) Crystalis (pretty good so far) Twin Cobra (decent) Sega CD AH3 Thunderstrike (decent) Formula One: Beyond the Limit (should be called beyond unplayable, just awful) LoadStar: The Legend of Tully Bodine (pretty bad but funny in it's badness) Slipheed (I like it so far) Genesis Todd's Adventures in Slime World (kind of sucks so far but I'll give it another shot) Add that to the 6 switch VCS and pile of commons somebody gave me for free and January is really shaping up for retro stuff found in the wild. Wickeycolumbus #13 Posted January 22, 2008 this almost happened to me when i almost spent $45 on a Flashback 2, but i was out bid and then found one for $15.
theking21083 #14 Posted January 24, 2008 So just sell the extra copy for what you paid for it and call it even. Or you could use it for a trade.
Classic Pac #15 Posted January 24, 2008 I have even found a few games really in the wild. As in stuff people have thrown out other than the 3 2600 carts, and 1 7800 My Genesis games include Evander Holyfield's Boxing CIB carts only Batman Returns Wheel of Fortune Grand Theft Auto PS1
jboypacman #16 Posted January 24, 2008 I can never find anything good in the wild and if i do it is priced as much as it would be on Ebay.
