Laserdisc Game Gameplay Videos?

Recommended Posts

Is there somewhere where I can download videos of people playing (and hopefully completing) old laserdisc games? I'd really love to see someone go through Badlands and Thayer's Quest (Halcyon version) as I was never able to finish those myself. I've seen some clips on youtube, but never complete game run throughs.

Ooo... Cliffhanger is another one I'd like to see a run through of. I saw a guy beat it at CGE one year, but I had missed the whole first half of the game.

Road Blasters (or whatever it was called) is another one.

Werent the Space Ace and Dragons Lair games released on DVD a few years ago? IIRC you could play it using the DVD remote, or watch a successful game

Yeah, I've at the very least seen the DVD version of Dragon's Lair. I almost picked it up for about $5, but decided against it as I am terrible at it! :)

I've been asked before to go through the Halcyon version of Thayer's, but haven't yet since I don't have any easy way to capture it. Anybody have any suggestions?

Do you actually have a Halcyon and the disc?

Yep. I've got a complete setup with both games. Not a whole lot of fun to play, but cool to have in a collection.

There's a few more pics of the system itself here:

You could always just hook it up to a video capture card and play.

[nosy]What's the "Biological Father" boxed... thing?[/nosy]

It always amazes me that so few people question that. I think you are only the 3rd or 4th to even ask about it!

It's a screen used prop from a videogame related movie called Existenz (it's a Cronenberg film). A good friend of mine is a movie prop collector and managed to buy most of the props from that film, so he gave me one to put in my case to see if anybody noticed it! In the movie, it's a 'cartridge' for the main system that they the film centers around.

Oh, okay! I'm feeling kinda stupid, because I actually own Existenz (on LD!) but sincerely do not remember much about the film. I guess it's been nearly a decade since it came out and I watched it.

Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, Space Ace and Thayer's Quest are all available in DVD-Video form from Digital Leisure at http://www.digitalleisure.com/contents/DVDVideo_games.htm. These can be played on your DVD player using your remote control. Unfortunately, the sequencing and moves are not arcade accurate and I the response delay and timing for getting the correct move can be frustrating (due to the differences between the my memory of the arcade moves and the DVD-Video moves).

Digital Leisure also sell Dragon's Lair and Space Ace in High Definition DVD (http://www.digitalleisure.com).

If you want to play the games with arcade accuracy on a PC then check out http://www.daphne-emu.com. To play Dragon's Lair, Dragon's lair II and Space Ace you need the "Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Special Edition" DVD-Video box set - Daphne rips the footage off of these discs (IIRC Daphne is not yet compatible with the new HD DVD offerings). All other video/audio footage for the other laserdisc games is obtained via http://www.laserarchive.com/ddl.

I have them all setup on my PC and regularly play them - arcade accurate, a range of different ROM variations to try and above all great fun.

I have the 20th anniversary pack and I tried to use the ripper long ago, but it didn't work well. Have they improved it since then? Where can I download it?

Daphne underwent a major change maybe around a year or more ago. It now uses Torrent to download the video/audio files - takes some time but it's worth the wait. For Dragon's lair, Dragon's Lair II and Space Ace it looks for the discs in your DVD drive - not sure if it converts the video/audio from the discs or just downloads it - but it does need the discs in your drive. Apparently the video/audio download/rip is authorised by Digital Leisure - hence the need for a copy of their discs (the discs are only needed for the initial donload/rip and are not needed later when playing the games). It is all very simple and seamless now. No more struggling with programs such as dvd2daph and then editing framefiles.

Just download and install Daphne from the first link above. Then download the Daphe Downloader software from the second link above.

So now it has to download the game files EVERY time I want play the game? It no longer uses the video files that have been floating around the net for ages? IIRC those files are HUGE and would take forever to download. Where are they hosted? What happens when that server goes away?

No. The DVDs allow you to authorize the legit torrent download; after that point, you do not need to download the video files again, nor have the DVDs present to play the game.

Same goes for the other games - once the video/audio files are downloaded they are then accessed locally when you play the games. It took around a good full 2 days to download the files when I did it - I just persevered and left the computer on.

So should I get rid of the ones I already have for the old version of Daphne or what?

If you go to a new version of DAPHNE, it wouldn't hurt to try old video/audio and ROM sets with it before deleting wholesale. I was unsuccessful in getting old video/audio/frame file sets for Bluth games working with the newest DAPHNE-- it seems the programmers are really pushing the DVD method-- which makes me wonder if original arcade-game owners of Bluth games are out in the cold despite having access to the originals. However, non-Bluth games seem to work fine with older files (I'm using sets for Interstellar, the Data East games, and Astron Belt that I got years ago), though in my experience, the update killed MACH 3l it now looks for ROM sets completely different from older sets, and different from the MAME sets.

It wouldn't hurt to archive stuff to DVD-R if you're gonna delete, though, since you may find it necessary to revert to an older DAPHNE.

So the files (other than the Bluth ones) are the same? Or are these updated somehow?
