+Random Terrain #26 Posted February 1, 2008 Why is it important to classify gamers again, I've forgotten? Because everyone must fit into certain categories to make it easier for advertisers to sell us stuff and so bullies and 'cool kids' will have the correct ammunition for their attacks. moycon #27 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) Why is it important to classify gamers again, I've forgotten? It aint. I think it all got started when gamers wanting to set themselves apart from the 60 year olds playing Wii Sports (and nothing else) started refering to themselves as "hardcore" as opposed to "casual". Some people think this is a travesty, I guess maybe in their eyes a gamer, is a gamer, is a gamer. Perhaps the end result will be equal rights for all people who play?? In my eyes if someone wants to set themself apart, more power to them. In the end, the whole thing reeks of un-importance, but you wouldn't know it based on how many people chime in when the topic gets brought up. Gregory DG #28 Posted February 2, 2008 Too bad people are so insecure about other people's gaming habits that they have to classify everyone into neat and tidy groups. I prefer to just call everyone a "gamer." Even grandma playing Wii sports. (Shoot, she's probably been playing games far longer than anyone here who would call themselves a "hardcore gamer.") I prefer to just call everyone a "gamer." Even grandma playing Wii sports. (Shoot, she's probably been playing games far longer than anyone here who would call themselves a "hardcore gamer.") I don't think that anyone is insecure at all and I know for a fact that many of the people playing Wii bowling have never shown an interest in video games...ever. But whatever. If someone wants to classify things. So f'in what? Humans have been classifying things for 1000's of years. Don't believe me? Look here.... http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/vertebrates.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_classification http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/Ethnobotany/page3.html Why is it anyone gives a shit about it now and why in the world would you assume the people were insecure?? LOL The fact is if you want to break down things in tidy little groups...It's not a huge deal and it doesnt mean a thing. If you want to refer to everyone in the entire universe as a "gamer" fine. Don't lose sleep over it.
Gregory DG #30 Posted February 2, 2008 I don't think that anyone is insecure at all and I know for a fact that many of the people playing Wii bowling have never shown an interest in video games...ever. Then we disagree. People seem so afraid that granny is playing Wii sports. What's the big deal? I think they're consciously or subconsciously afraid that there will be fewer Halo-type game because the publishers will start making simple Wii games instead. And granny may not have played VIDEO games prior to Wii, but I guaran-damn-tee that she's been playing games longer that the self-proclaimed "Hardcore" video gamers. Whether it's cards, bingo, mahjong, chess, checkers, crosswords, or whatever.
liveinabin #31 Posted February 2, 2008 I guess I'm not a gamer even though I play games a lot. I'm a human being who play's video games a lot. There. That way I don't have to be in anyone's club
moycon #32 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) I'm a human being who play's video games a lot. There. That way I don't have to be in anyone's club Maybe that's what's it's all about. Some people just don't like to be classified?? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with anyone Gregory DG, nor am I afraid of any granny that plays a videogame. The whole subject just seems so mundane to me it's hard for me to grasp the concept of anyone worrying that they might be classified as certain type of gamer enough to devote time arguing why they shouldn't be. It does make for compelling conversation though for sure!! I can tell you right now, if you're thinking that people that use these terms are afraid, or insecure or, just plain stupid, I would beg to differ. If that's what you mean by we'll have to disagree, then, ok yeah you're right but I base my disagreement on fact. I'm not any of those things, and I’ll bet others that know me would agree. I’d even go as far to say that if anyone was insecure, it would be the person that took offense to be referred to as a certain type of gamer! Not exactly a major issue with the bulk of humanity (Including Mah Jong and Crossword playing Grama's) I can assure you. (Haha Mah Jong and crosswords!??...Where'd that come from!?!?!)
