Instructions for PD game Virtual Pet?

Hi, I just stumbled on this program while going through some atari demos. It caught my interest and was wondering if there were any instructions on how to use it properly. There's tons of symbols at the bottom of the screen to scroll through and I have no idea what they are

You can't do much with this, it's an unfinished WIP. You can change the Pet by pressing left or right and change the symbols by pressing up or down, the fire button doesn't seem to do anything.
