Just got an STE with extras today as a GIFT!

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who has been an Atari fan for...well since the begining, he's nearly 50, but he's decided to give me some stuff he doesn't use anymore, including one of his 2 STE's. With bonuses; the floppy drive doesn't work, so he used a Syquest removable HD with an attached ZIP250 to boot the system, a sound sampler cart that allows external sound samples, a VIDI ST-12 video digitizer, and of course the SC1224 monitor. I have a replacement internal floppy, so that will work soon, but the external HD and ZIP will be a welcome addition still. Plus, he gave me about 20 complete boxed games, most flight sims, but all good. He told me it was all a late Christmas present. WOO-HOO, Thank's Santa!!!

Though I do have a Mega STE and an STF, this is a welcome addition mainly becuase the STE has the extra controller ports that can use the STE/Jaguar controllers! Now I can finally play Zero5 and some other games with my jaguar controller instead of the mouse&keyboard! I'll never understand why they didn't include these ports on the Mega STE. :|

But the extra montior means I don't have to swap cables between my ST's and my Jaguar anymore, now my Jaguar has it's own monitor! (actually I have 4 SC1224's, but two are broken and I need to replace about a dozen capacitors to get the others working again, but once I do, then all my systems will have their own monitor! SWEET)

But that's not all! Not by a LONG shot! See, my friend recently got himself a top-of-the-line macintosh ($7,000) computer, and he's into video production and CAD, well, he still uses his other STE AND Falcon for CAD (CAD 3D/Pheonix), BUT, he said he'll be getting a professional CAD system for his MAC soon, and when he does he's going to give me his other STE AND his Falcon!!! (I have been eyeing his Falcon for years) I'll be totally set when I get that Falcon, but in the meantime I'm happy with the new additions to my ST line.

Soon though, I'll probably sell my STF off, once I get it's monitor fixed, and it's upgraded with Rainbow TOS and Stereo sound Tweety-board and my own custom center/subwoofer mono audio RCA output too, and brand new internal floppy and keyboard, if anyone is interested (it's all been re-painted as it had yellowed badly, but I did a professional job on it).

Overall, a VERY nice score for me! All the software is especially amazing!

Well, since you shared this with us, would you care to share what are you planning to do with them? :)

I did. I'm going to sell the STF system, and keep and use the rest, as I stated. :) Oh, The extra STE, when I get it, will probably be sold too. I haven't decided if I'll sell on eBay or not, but I'll probably offer them for sale/trade in the market place section here first. But I've offered cool stuff there before with no response, so...

If you mean what I'm planning to do with all the extras, use them of course! :)

Oh, and by the way, my friend who gave/will give it all to me told me I should sell the stuff on eBay, but I told him I'd keep most of it. He just needs to get it out of his way and had no interest in the bother of selling it all. He said I was the only friend he had that would appreciate it all.

that's awesome I'm happy for you. That's a good idea that he added a zip drive to the Atari. May I ask what kind of zip drive is it (i.e. Parallel, SCSI) and to which port on the Atari it is connected to?

It's a SCSI zip. A Parallel is actually the easiest to attach to the ST, or that is, it should be, assuming there's a driver out there somewhere for it. With the SCSI, since Atari once again had to use a non-standard ACSI (Atari SCSI basically) DMA port, you need an extra intermediate drive with a SCSI adapter and then you connect the SCSI ZIP as a slave. This is the way this set-up is; I have a Syquest removable HD, which the HD part doesn't work, but the SCSI adapter in it still works, so basically the Syquest drive is connected to the ST DMA, then the ZIP is connected to a SCSI port on the Syquest, and the ST recognizes the Syquest, but it doesn't work. But, the ZIP works as a slave throught the Syquest, and the ST can be booted from the ZIP. So I basically am using the SCSI ZIP 250 as a "removable HD" and I'm going to connect another SCSI ZIP 100 to the ZIP 250. Of course I've already replaced the bad floppy drive in the STE, so that works now again too. Right now I'm busy removing some of the upgrades from my STF and installing them into the STE, then I'll sell (for dirt cheap) or give the STF away. The STE already has 4 SIMM memory cards in it too, so it's a full 4MB. Another thing I'm doing is swapping out keyboards, as I have a Mega STE, but no keyboard for it, so I had modified the STF's keyboard to attach to my Mega STE to use as the keyboard for the Mega. Now I'm going to swap keyboards so I can still use the STE as a keyboard for my Mega STE too. Next I have to figure out how I can modify the STE's analog ports for use with my Mega STE (since they aren't connected to the keyboard like the regular mouse/controller ports) so I can have the best of both worlds with a 16MHz Mega STE that has use of analog ports. That will be a lot more difficult to do than modifying the keyboard for use with the Mega STE was though... :ponder: ...It may not be possible, but I'm looking into it.

Hey, PM me when you want to dump that STf. I've got the RAM for it, and I'd love to get into the STs. Just need a unit and a mouse. I've go the monitor already. I'm sure we can work out a fair price. :)
