Cannon Fodder 2

Recommended Posts

No, it's not for the Jaguar, but this post is Jaguar related. I just got Cannon Fodder 2 for my Atari STE, it's the first time I've played Cannon Fodder on a computer with a mouse, so I thought I'd compare it to Jaguar Cannon Fodder. First off, other than a drop in color, it looks just like Jag Cannon Fodder, it runs a bit slower than Jag Cannon Fodder, but not much, overall graphically, it looks really good for an ST game. There are no cut scenes or animated interludes. The sounds and music are good, but not quite up to par with the Jag version, not as much ambient sound, no little men screaming, but it does sound really good with my tweety-board stereo upgrade (yes, the STE comes with stereo sound, but older games are just mono out of both speakers unless you have the stereo 3D tweety-board upgrade too!). But overall, it's an excellent version. I can't say yet whether it's easier than Jaguar Cannon Fodder, since I've only played a few missions and it's still early in the game, but this game rocks just like the Jag version, and since it's the sequel, it's all-different levels. As for mouse control, other than the arrow moving slightly faster than the Jaguar's with the controller, I find it no easier or harder than using a Jaguar controller, really. Everybody always says it's so much better, and I admit, so far it's seem *slightly* better, but it's no big deal, I can control the Jaguar version just as easily. Mice are overrated IMHO. I prefer FPS games with controllers, and it makes no difference to me with this game. Both are great versions and just as fun. War is just as fun on both systems! War! never been so much fun!

I agree, there are a lot of great ST games that could be ported or emulated on the Jaguar, and this is one of them. You don't even need the Jaguar Cannon Fodder's source here, just the source to the ST CF2. But, Cannon Fodder isn't an Atari owned game like Cybermorph, Checkered Flag and others that can just be source-hacked, licensing is required. Which makes it a better and cheaper idea to do emulation rather than porting. And all those great ST games can still be better on the Jag than the ST for speed issues. For example, the hacker team 'D-Bug' has been hacking a lot of great ST games to work with the faster Mega STE's and Falcon and it makes a world of difference. Though it's a lot more work to create an emulator and if done, it may only be able to reach original speeds. It's not an easy job, but it not impossible wouldn't think either.

I think you missed one be negative about the Atari ST (and Amiga) versions is the loading time from disk. It takes awhile to load each new level. Fortunately the Jaguar has none, that is why I think the Jaguar is the probably the best version. I like the music from the 3DO or CD32 versions, but they also suffer from load times.
