Did I get a damaged NES Advantage?

Recommended Posts

Yup, it's me again. Another controller problem this time with the NES Advantage, which I got yesterday. I'm having a problem with diagonal movement. I don't know if this is something normal with the NES Advantage or if mine's damaged or dirty, but for some reason, up, down, left and right works, but if I want to do diagonal movement, I need to practically force on the stick to get any movement(very bad for me, since I play LOTS of shoot-em-ups). Did the NES Advantage have any defect of some sort? Did dirt build up in mine? Is the stick broken?

Yeah, sounds dirty. I've got two NES Advantage sticks that have no trouble with diagonal movement.

They're pretty easy to take apart and clean; I cleaned out both of mine --just remember where all the pieces go.

Easy to take apart? You gotta be kidding me! I spent ten minutes trying to pry the damn thing open. Are there only 2 screws to remove, or are there other hidden ones someplace else?

They typically hide them under the rubber feet of most electronic devices. I imagine the Advantage is no different, although it's been years since I've used mine.

yes. the advantage has screws under the rubber feet. i think there should be 6 screws total

Dude I've got about 10 of these things. PM me if you want one for the price of shipping cost. :)

Not needed, but thanks for the offer. Diagonal movement is a lot easier now, but I'd need a tutorial on how to properly use this damn controller. Diagonal movement is near-impossible when moving the stick to the edge of the area where it's housed. I need to move the stick halfway for proper diagonal movement.

I can still do diagonal movement though, it's just that I can't push the stick too far, otherwise diagonal movement won't respond unless I apply full force to the stick. Something I noticed, though, is that the stick seems to lift off the pads when it's pushed to the max, so I don't know if that could cause a problem.

Funny. I once thought of getting rid of the diagnal movement on this stick to make it easier to play Pac-man and Burgertime

I got one of these a few months back and noticed a similar thing with diagonal movement. My solution was to apply a couple layers of electical tape on the joystick part that pushes onto the rubber contacts, thus the contacts get pushed down with smaller movements, and since the spring keeps the joystick centred nicely there's no accidental movement either.

Though while we're on the subject, I have a related question. My A button turbo is faster overall than my B button turbo, as in, both the minimum and maximum repeat speeds are higher for A than for B. Is that normal, or a sign that the capacitor on one of the buttons wearing out?

Can you give an approximation as to how many layers of electric tape to put on?

On a side note, I got a Super Advantage recently, and noticed that this works BETTER than the NES Advantage(and I thought it was made cheaper than the NES Advantage, at least, that's what Wikipedia was saying about it)! Normal?

Not really... because it all depends on what level of sensitivity you want. Try one layer first, then add more if you feel it's not enough. I also add a small piece to the outside of the controller/joystick to remind me that I've done this in the first place.
