2,000th post - time for some pics

Recommended Posts

Well, after 2000 posts, some pics to keep you and me motivated in the wonderful world of Atari and classic gaming. I hope to be moving in the future (anywhere from 6 months to 1 year), and my next abode will finally feature a dedicated game room with systems, games, and memorabilia. Stuff is scattered all around, a lot has to stay packed away, but I have to be able to get to my games - playing them is what it's all about!

VERY impressive. I'm always in awe of people who have the courage and frankly, the lack of sanity ( :P ) to invest the extra $$ and space in boxed.

I hate you. Lately I've been trying to resist the temptation to sell all my systems except for the 7800 and it's boxed 2600 and 7800 collection to start just buying Atari stuff (which is pretty much all I ever play anymore). It's close to an obsession. I recently sold off 7 or so systems and their collections and the only one I think I might one day buy back is the Jaguar (when I have the money it takes to really collect for it). Now, on top of the obsession I see a huge collection of boxed Atari stuff. How am I supposed to avoid the temptation to sell my NES and games to start a Lynx collection once I see that shelf of Lynx stuff? Now when I look at the Nintendo Wii sitting under the TV it just looks like a bag of cash sitting in the way of a 5200 or XEGS. Thanks for nothing.

Looks great! make sure you keep them out of sun from windows or any lights or they will fade on the spine that is showing. I really want that Black and white box for the swordquest game you have. You have a bunch of the harder to find boxes in great shape.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I started collecting Atari and other classic era stuff back in 1993, and I've been mainly focusing on boxed games since about 2002. I know there are other folks with more expansive collections, and I bow to their collecting dedication. Yeah, you have to be a tad deranged to embrace the boxed aesthetic, but c'mon, we are simply passing through history. Atari, this *is* history. ;)

I think now is a pretty good time to get into boxed games, mainly because the price for most titles has gone down significantly compared to the past with more availability thanks to the internet. You could put together a really impressive R1-R4 set in no time at all for the 2600, and getting a near complete 7800 set definitely attainable. In the immortal words of Crazy Climber, "Go for it!" Plus it's fun when you talk about Atari with other people, they ask if you have a particular title, you say, "Let's go pull it from the collection," and then you see their reaction which is typically, "They made THAT MANY games for the Atari?!?"

Absolutely - these are kept completely away from any and all lights (definitely no sunlight exposure) unless I am getting something out to play. I have them on the racks (for now) for ease of storage/access and portability. Generally speaking, I'm okay with boxes that show some wear, but a lot of them are in rather good shape; I have just a couple I'm looking for better versions of (and then about 20 or so loose carts that I'm looking for boxed versions of).

Yeah, I'm already a boxed games only convert for the 7800 (although I made one exception to buy Rampage, with the intention of getting a box or boxed copy later on), and have started that for the 2600. Something about getting a game the way it was sold when I was a kid is more rewarding, as is displaying boxed games instead of tubs full of carts.

I can´t trust my eyes! What a great and nicely organized collection you have! How much money went into it???

Alex

Hmmm, at some point I should go back through my records and try to answer the money question more precisely (for insurance purposes I have an itemized list). Games bought and sold over the years (I began cart collecting back in 1993, box collecting around 2002, maybe a year or two earlier) has helped me out a lot because what I sold went right back into acquiring more stuff.
