ninermaniac #1 Posted February 27, 2008 I sat down and pulled out some games I haven't played in awhile. A few Activision, a few Atari red and silver label games, and I got to my CBS electronic games. I got to say. I really think that CBS thought out their games. They I believe made only 7 games available for regular purchase. Games like Mountain King, Tunnel Runner, Gorf, And Solar Fox to name a few. I really like everyone of them. I can't say that about Activision, Panda, and Atari to name few. So. Now I have a new favorite series and that is CBS Electronics games. To me I believe these were the best thought out by one single company. I even liked Wizards of Wor. What do you think?
[d2f]Iggy*SJB #2 Posted February 27, 2008 A trip to my favorite shop netted me the 5200 version of Gorf. I have the 2600 version(aquired from the same store). They did a bang-up job on both versions. I just wish they had incorporated the voice into at least the 5200 version. But, yeah. CBS games are pretty good.
StanJr #3 Posted February 27, 2008 CBS's library is about as solid as Parker Bros. Neither company turned out too many duds and pretty much every game is loved by someone (save for Strawberry Shortcake, maybe...) Blue Print is a lot of fun Tunnel Runner is amazing Mountain King and Solar Fox are tops as well. I'm not as hot on GORF, but I'll still play it. shadow460 #4 Posted February 27, 2008 How many of BBS's games are ports? Gorf, Omega Race, Wizard of Wor, and Solar Fox are. Gorf, WoW, and Blueprint are probably the weakest of CBS's titles. Mountain King and Tunnel Runner are impressive, though TR is easily eclipsed by Escape From the MindMaster. CBS is okay as a company, but only two of their titles scream "Play me!" IMO. jboypacman #5 Posted February 27, 2008 Wizard of Wor all the way baby! It was a favorite of mine growing up and still is today.I remember running down Saturday afternoons to my friend's house just to play this game on his 2600. Tunnel Runner is a impressive effort for its time and i think it is still impressive even today. Gorf isnt a bad port of one of my more remember arcade favorites(The Colecovision version is great)i wish it had voice in it thats for sure. Omega Race is a game i use to like to play at the local bowling alley when i was a youngster the 2600 port is a respectable port but i need that stinking booster grip to play!(I think a Colecovision controller will work in a pinch). Blue Print is a fun favorite of mine it is very diffrent from alot of other games(2600,5200 or arcade wise)out there at the time. Mountain King is my lest favorite of all the CBS Electronic releases its not a bad game its just a game i dont really get into to much maybe its time i give it a second look. Solar Fox is a game i didnt really care for when i was younger(much like Missile Command)but now that am older i really enjoy it as i understand it better i guess. CBS Electronics made/ported some great games to the 2600 and i think i would rate them fairly high on the scale of 2600 game makers.

Tunnel Runner and (the unreleased) Wings were the only original 2600 CBS releases. 2600 Mountain King was a "port" of the Atari 800/5200 game. Also...Solar Fox, Tunnel Runner and Wings are probably the only VCS titles that were developed internally at CBS...everything else was contracted out. +Nathan Strum #7 Posted February 27, 2008 Tunnel Runner freaked me out. The echoing music, the blind corners, getting chomped to death. Great stuff! I could never get past the crazy flickering in Omega Race, which is too bad, since it's one of my favorite arcade games. Solar Fox is excellent, as is Mountain King. Gorf is a decent port, but could have been better. I miss having vertical movement in the players' ship, and the Galaxian wave (yes, yes... licenscing issues). Gorf is another of my favorite arcade games. Haven't played much of the others, but overall CBS did a pretty good job.
ninermaniac #8 Posted February 27, 2008 I too thought Tunnel Runner was freaky but that's a reason I like it. I hate dull and boring. All I will them play again and again. I'm gonna try to figure out Tunnel Runner. I'll let ya know how I do.
StanJr #9 Posted February 27, 2008 Tunnel Runner is great, but I don't think it compares with Mindmaster. The games are pretty different. I like them both a great deal, but I don't think you can really make a fair comparison. I had forgotten Omega Race. It is totally worth hunting down that stupid booster grip controller add-on. I love it. Have never played the arcade.
cosmosiss #10 Posted February 27, 2008 Man, I can't believe that to this day, I still haven't played Tunnel Runner. I think I just poped it once to test it. I do love Solar fox!
Vic George 2K3 #11 Posted February 27, 2008 Mountain King is my least favorite 2600 game from CBS. A lot of hunting for that crown, plus a lousy control system that makes it very hard to get to the top with the crown before time runs out or a bat steals it. Foxsolo2000 #12 Posted February 27, 2008 I have played a lot of Gorfs on a lot of systems and have always thought the 2600 version to be the hardest. Wizard of Wor is one of the best two player games available for the system
ATARIPITBULL #13 Posted February 27, 2008 Wizards of wor is always on my top 10 list of all time favorite games and the CBS version is about as good as they come.
Red 5 #14 Posted February 27, 2008 ALL HAIL TUNNEL RUNNER ! Still my favorite 2600 game. If I had a nicke for every time I plugged Tunnel Runner and Fathom... oh wait... I just poste that somewhere else last week. One of my favorite parts about Tunnel Runner is the pure speed of the later levels. For an Atari game to make you feel like you are going WAAAY too fast is great. Almost like the Burnout series now on this-gen systems. The zots are evil and the cut scene where you get eaten is fantastic. The zots music is absolute classic as well. It was brilliant how the music got louder the closer they got. So creepy. Especially running into a dead end and then hearing the faint music slowly getting louder and knowing there was no escape. Don't get me wrong, I love Adventure, but how this game is not the hands down #1 favorite Atari game for more people blows me away. A seperate map screen by pressing the button, mysterious doors, etc. It's all brilliant. I used to be able to get way up into the higher levels, even well after the mazes turn invisible. Does anyone know if this game loops, has a kill screen, or is beatable ? (I love Escape from the Mindmaster too, but they are different games entirely. Mindmaster is more of a puzzle game and I always think that Starpath games cheat for using more RAM)
cosmosiss #15 Posted February 27, 2008 Hey! Don't CBS carts use RAM too?

mos6507 #23 Posted February 27, 2008 WoW is one of those games that's hard to not like in any of its incarnations. The 2600 version is no exception, despite the flicker.

Just a little interview with the CBS Vice Pres. back in the day when all this was going on if anyone's interested... Finally got around to reading that article. That guy really knew what he was talking about and had the future of gaming just about dead on. He was talking about online banking and xbox live back in the early 80's. Pretty impressive.
