2600: Unported 1983 Arcades Part II (C-H)

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

Since I'm always looking for old Arcades that could make a cool 2600 project, I thought it might be even more fun to discuss such projects in the public forum here. I have now compiled a second batch of interesting looking choices from 1983:

Cosmic Chasm Cinematronics
Dingo Jaleco
Discs of Tron Bally Midway
Dog Fight Thunderbolt
Donkey Kong 3 Nintendo
Exerion Jaleco
Fighting Roller Taito
Great Guns Stern
Gridlee Videa
Guzzler Tehkan
Heart Attack Century Electronics
Hero Seatongrove
High Way Race Taito
Hopper Robo Sega
Hunchback Century Electronics

Which of these look doable, interesting and/or fun enough to make it a worthy addition to the VCS library?

COSMIC CHASM!!!!! (please?)

I used to LOVE playing this game on the Vectrex back in the day :)

...but how would you handle the expanding core in the middle of the screen? Is it too big a jump (4 pixels at a time) for playfield graphics?

The "Discs of Tron" is a classic - and doesn't look that hard on the 2600.

HERO could be a interesting choice as would DK3 but i always imagined if some one ported DK3 to a Atari it would be the 7800 for some reason still if some one did a 2600 port i would have to try it out.

Cosmic Chasm and Disc of Tron are good choices too but i would think it would be neat if you did some of the more less known ones on your list as a 2600 game. :)

I can't help but wonder how Discs of Tron could be implemented on the 2600. You'd need both a paddle (to aim) and a joystick (to move the Tron character) if you were to make it faithful to the arcade game. It could be done easely on the ColecoVision with the Roller Controller, but on the 2600? It could work if the Tron character remains stationnary at the bottom of the screen, but with a single fire button, the game would broil down to a simple frisbee shoot-fest.

On the other hand, you could possibly move the Tron character left and right with the paddle controller, by turning the rotary dial all the way to the left (or right) and holding down the fire button... That could work... :)

It could be done on one joystick. When the button is not pressed, the joystick moves the player around on the platforms (forward/backward, left/right). When the button is pressed down, the target crosshairs move (up/down, left/right). When the button is released, a disc is fired. Granted, this would require the user to stand still while aiming, but that would still work with the game play. It just means you have to aim quickly.
