Mouse Trap with a proper button config.

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to hack CV Mouse Trap so that the buttons on a Super Action Controller would open/close doors, and transform the mouse to a dog versus the stupid keypad button layout we've been cursed with all these many years. If you think about it, it almost works out perfectly. The game has red, yellow, and blue doors. The Super Action Controller has a red, yellow and blue button. Then you need a 4th button for transformation... oh wait the Super Action Controller "has" a 4th button. Sure it's purple instead of green as it is on the overlay, but close enough. Who wants to take on this glorious task?

While I have the abilities for hardwre mods, software is a little out of my scope.

Ah, I see. Shouldn't be that hard to do if someone really wanted to try it.

Theoretically it should be relatively easy since the extra two buttons are mapped like two extra keypad codes.

It should even be possible to patch it to work both ways at the same time. And I still have the disassembly info I made years ago when seeing which games called into which parts of the ROM.

It in theory it would be possible to write it with a controller selection screen after the title screen, but before the game selection screen, like Spy Hunter and others. Something like:

1) Standard Controller

2) Super Action Controller

Okay, I've got a patch where I can assign F3 and F4 to map as any two keypad buttons. You just have to tell me how you want them mapped.

I haven't played Mouse Trap, so I don't know how the keypad works with it. I see the overlay has a dog face on 5 and 1,2,3 are colored. I'm guessing that * and # are the reset/pause buttons.

I would have it as such:

Original - #1 (red doors), New - mapped to SAC red button

Original - #2 (yellow doors), New - mapped to SAC yellow button

Original - #3 (blue doors), New - mapped to SAC blue button

Original - #5 (dog), New - mapped to SAC purple button

Errr... which color is which fire button?

I think this might could be done if there was some checking for the regular fire buttons, but it's not as trivial as I had hoped.

Still, if the regular fire buttons are not used by the game, there is no reason not to patch the game to work both ways.

The game does not use either of the fire buttons at all. All action, aside from movement, is done through keypad inputs. It is set up as:

Keypad #1 - Red Doors

Keypad #2 - Yellow Doors

Keypad #3 - Blue Doors

Keypad #5 - Dog

That's why I think a hack of it coded for the super action buttons would be a lot easier to play

Yellow Button - Yellow Doors

Red Button - Red Doors

Purple Button - Dog

Blue Button - Blue Doors
