guardian legend for nes

Recommended Posts

It's not incredibly rare, I saw three copies of it at a local flea market, but you did get it for a nice price.

As for the game itself, I personally believe its one of the must underrated, underappreciated games on the NES. The game is kind of divided into two parts: its a space shooter and it has an equally entertaining top-down adventure mode similar to the Zelda games. But yeah, its a great game if your a fan of either of those types of games you'll like this one.

The guardian legend kept me busy for many many months as a child.

The Guardian Legend is perhaps my all-time favourite shooter. Compile made EXCELLENT shooters. I recently became aware of another NES game called Gun Nac, which they made, which I want...

But back to TGL, I once tried to crack its password system, since there's some really weird codes you can enter that do strange things... I figured with enough effort I could create a program that could generate passwords based on the stats you wanted. The furthest I ever got was learning that for every combination of game stats there are 256 valid passwords, and I also figured out how to convert any one password to any of its other 255 valid substitutes. Alas, that's as far as I ever got because decoding the password itself was Hell. x_x;

This is one of the very few games I can call myself a master at. I can beat the adventure mode, start to finish, in about three hours and can beat TGL mode as well. In fact, the last three times I played were all start to finish games. It's been a long time since I've actually written down or entered a password for this game. XD

I also like how one of the guys who made the game, and many of Compile's other shooters, is also called "Jemini", which would be the Japanese way of spelling "Gemini", which is my handle on the net. Neat stuff. :)

nice gemini so you are da master in dis game huh did u ever compete with others in the game for highest score? :)

Actually, I find aiming for a high score in this game to be pointless. The key reason being that it takes forever to hit 9,999,990, but beyond that even, from start to finish you can usually expect to hit around 2,000,000, which means to get significantly higher would mean artificially inflating your score by revisiting rooms over and over again.

There are certain games where I don't care to make high scores and this is one of them, even though it's also one of my favourite games of all time.

...actually, come to think of it, I generally don't like aiming for high scores in 2D shooters that have a set end. If the game repeats after you beat it while retaining your score, that's different, but TGL has a solid end in both of its game modes.

TGL is one of the finest NES games out there. Certainly underrated, if you ask me. I enjoy its take on mixing genres that normally don't mix, and I think the result is nicely done. Besides that, the music in the game is high quality, the graphics are nice, and the shooter stages are fun, if not down-right insane sometimes at the sheer amount of stuff the game hurls at you, especially in those upper levels.

The overhead adventure part of the game is just as excellent, giving you a nice large world to explore and secret areas to find, as well as a few puzzles along the way. But if you like the shooting areas in TGL, I recommend a couple of other Compile titles, Zanac and Gunnac, both for the NES. :D

I just wanted to jump in and say that I also really like the Guardian Legend. I like it enough that I did a blog about it last year on 1up <here>.

(The chick in my avatar is from the Japanese box art for the game.)

Hope you enjoy it.

Surprised noone forgot to mention that it's one of those games that seriously pushed the capabilities of the system. In fact, the system was pushed so far that you could actually exploit some glitches that were caused. One example would be the "Enemy Eraser" trick. Basically get several enemies and/or enemy shots on screen and start spamming the weapon. You'll wind up creating multiple item boxes containing hearts, energy tanks, blue and red chips, and more enemy erasers.

I actually remember one weekend when I was trying to get further in the game after I rented it, I was actually feeling very upset when it was time to take ti back to the video store. One of those few games that really kept my interest.
