An alternate reality with your favorite game universes

This idea partially came from thinking about that Futurama episode where one guy asks about what life would be like if it were more like a video game. So, I was wondering, what do you think it would be like if your favorite video game worlds and characters were in your world?

 

I can say that if the Jumping Flash characters were in my world, it would be a much better place, because of all the threats to dismantle it from really weird bad guys.

 

Unless, of course, they all decide to retire to small asteroids.

I'm not sure which video game world I would bring into my reality but I'm certain that the soundtrack would be an all-Rush mix tape.

There is a thing in science fiction called "Augmented Reality" where computerized equipment augments your surroundings to provide you with a semi-real, semi-virtual experience. I don't doubt that a day will come when computers are powerful, small and inexpensive enough to do such a thing and that one day, augmented reality gaming will carve itself a niche market.

 

I pesonally feel that an augmented reality version of Pokémon would be extremely cool. Where your GPS coordinates, time of day, weather, temperature, would all affect what kind of Pokémon you spot and WiFi would allow people to battle each other the same way Pokémon trainers actually would.

 

Augmented reality would primarily suit first-person shooters and adventure games. You could also put together virtual rooms in your house with virtual objects just for the heck of it. Or, the augmented reality software could be put to a productive use by overlaying maps and directions as you travel, or could even be used to help you memorize the names of people by overlaying their names on their bodies or over their heads.

 

As for alternates realities, the universe of Freelancer would be a neat one to be enaged in. The Battletech/Mechwarrior universe would be a volatile and difficult one but interesting. I've always tried to imagine what Bubble Bobble would be like in 3D for ages so I would jump at the opporunity to visit an alternate reality like that. I've frequently visited alternate realities related to Doom, System Shock and Descent in my dreams, though I think actually visiting such places would be damning.
