Former Xbox Europe VP says consoles will be dead in 5-10 years

Recommended Posts

Dead, as in the 2600 is "dead"? A system that has a very active homebrew scene, and is still actively bought and sold throughout the world? Bah. This guy is a moron. Gaming consoles is what drives the industry, period. Will movies be dead in five to ten years? No, and the gaming industry now makes more annually than movies do.

I wouldn't be suprised if handhelds took over, but consoles won't die anytime soon.

Actually I'm thinking more along the lines that handhelds will become the consoles. Already we have the newer PSPs with the ability to connect to HDTV sets (although the games don't display full screen... yet). So it wouldn't be too far-fetched to consider a handheld designed with the ability for TV play built into the machine as well. A system that provides gaming on the go, and when you're home, plug the same unit into your TV for big-screen gaming.

I don't think consoles will every truly go away. At the very worst, they'll just get absorbed by handhelds in this fashion, which really wouldn't be so bad at all if they can manage to figure out how to get handhelds to push the same power as a modern console these days.

Well, if you want to know what current gen console will be most collectable in 20 years it has to be the 360.

Wii's will be so common they will be a dime a dozzen.

The PS3's will probably be the final winner for this gen so they will still be on the market for 10+ years.

And more importantly... most of the 360's will be dead by then. :D

consoles won't die as long as pc gaming remains costly/buggy. And few households will continue not to want to give up the primary internet machine for games.

I do see more handhelds hooking to tvs in the future, but they will continue to remain almost a decade behind consoles in terms of technology, and I don't see them using tv's to their fullest thanks to aspect ration and resolution issues as well as the requirement for a video cable in the age of wireless controllers. TV out will continue to be a value added feature few will use.

still, if consoles continue their pricing trend they could be undercut. the market is already screaming for a budget console that doesn't suck, and I see room for a $75-120 dvd-based console which offers a high quality 'traditional' gaming experience. a few have been tried (xavix, gamewave, v-flash) but the poor quality games and/or unusual controllers are really what kill them. The games on modern consoles are pretty, but few seem to be 'all that' to the entent of being worth the climing price of admission. It's a feeling that seems to be common, at least in my circle. (most of my friends are sticking with ps2's or their modified xboxes)

There is no way the console will die. The most I could see is the market again shrinking back to two commercially viable platforms. Even after all these years, it still feels like there's too much redundancy, and not ALL of the competition between the big 3 is translating into benefits for the consumer. But die? Nah, no way. Gaming is a more succesful industry than hollywood movies and broadcast TV, for the moment at least.
