Sparta Dos 3.2 Sparta Dos 6.1d Dos XE Turbo Dos XE Super Dos 5.1 I was hoping they all would have a menu like DOS XL, DOS 2.0, DOS 2.5 and so on, or am I missing something ?? Sparta DOS in all versions is a command-line driven DOS which means no menu. I think the later versions 3 & X had a Menu.Com program which could be used with them if you had to have a menu, but I never had any use for it. However your reference to Sparta 6.1d is actually Smart DOS 6.1 since there is no version 6 of SpartaDOS. SmartDOS 6.1d is a menu driven DOS like AtariDOS. LYNXGUY #6 Posted April 7, 2008 OK with SPARTA DOS 3.2g I got the menu and my best friend wants me to make a few copies for him, I am trying to find out how to format and copy dos files onto another disk With turbo DOS XE I get D1> after the disk loads
cas #7 Posted April 7, 2008 OK with SPARTA DOS 3.2g I got the menu and my best friend wants me to make a few copies for him, I am trying to find out how to format and copy dos files onto another disk With turbo DOS XE I get D1> after the disk loads Turbo Dos XE is also a command line DOS. There is a DiskCopy Tool shipped with Turbo DOS, called DiskCopy.com. If you enter "diskcopy" on the prompt, it should load and start. You can copy the dos disk with every full disk copy program, so you can copy a SpartaDOS Disk with the Dos 2.5 "duplicate disk" function. Else, on spartados, use "xinit" to format the new disk, then use the "copy" command to copy the files, and then use the "boot" command to make the new disk bootable. If you need to have a identical copy, the best way is to use a disk copy program. Attached is my collection of Disk-Copy programs (some might only work with extended RAM or Happy and Speedy Disk Enhancements). LYNXGUY #8 Posted April 7, 2008 (edited) Else, on spartados, use "xinit" to format the new disk, then use the "copy" command to copy the files, and then use the "boot" command to make the new disk bootable. I arrowed down to and selected XIXIT and I pressed enter and I got a "which drive?" prompt then I entered 1 then it said "loading the directory of drive 1' but it didn't ititialize/format the blank disk ?? Turbo DOS XE I pressed the help key and i got all the commands but when I type INI I see D1: DOS.SYS then the following error ERROR #8B=.0139 I also see ? * ! = + - < > above the list of 3 letter commands DOS XE is no longer a problem as I figured that one out NOTE: these DOS SYSTEMS are not original/master disks but were copied for me Edited April 7, 2008 by L¥NXGU¥
+CharlieChaplin #9 Posted April 7, 2008 Well, - SuperDOS: all versions of SuperDOS I know have a DOS menu, called SDUP.SYS, just like DOS 2.0 and DOS 2.5... - TurboDOS XE: if this is the DOS by Reitershan, simply press the HELP key or type in HEL to get all DOS commands - Smart DOS 6.1 has a DOS menu, also called DUP.SYS (70 sectors in sd length)... maybe your disk versions are missing the DUP.SYS or SDUP.SYS files... greetings, Andreas Koch. Here is a reference card of Turbo DOS http://www.strotmann.de/~cas/Infothek/RefT...teTurbo-DOS.pdf It's in german, but it might help figuring out the commands. +CharlieChaplin #13 Posted April 7, 2008 (edited) Well, concerning Turbo DOS XL/XE (by Reitershan), these are some of the available commands: - HEL = help, lists all available DOS commands on screen - CAR = goto cartridge - DIR = directory - LOA = load (binary) - HEA = header of ML files (dumps segments to screen) - BAC = set back-adress (where DOS jumps to when OPTION is pressed, normally Atari Basic, but could be any other adress or program) - LOC = lock file - UNL = unlock file - DEL = delete file - REN = rename file (give two filenames, the old name and the new name !) - FMS = format single (90k) - FME = format enhanced (130k) - FMD = format double (180k) - FMQ = format quad (360k, only possible with Turbo DOS version XF and EX) - CLR = clear disk (if its already formatted, it "clears" the DIR and VTOC, so the disk looks like freshly formatted) - VER = show version (there are versions NT, HS, XF or EX; where NT means normal+turbo, HS means Happy+Speedy, XF means XF551 and EX means extended = Turbo+Happy+Speedy+XF) - INI = initialize DOS + DUP or better write DOS+DUP to disk (add /N or /D if you want to initialize only DOS or only DUP) Note: - a minus "-" after a filename acts as *.*, thus one can type e.g. LOA FIL- - SHIFT-Return will act as a binary loader of *.COM files, thus one can e.g. type F and then press Shift-Return, the DOS will automatically add the rest of the name and the .COM extender and binary load it - whenever a given abbreviation for a filename like "*" or "?" or "-" matches multiple files, Turbo DOS will ask you which file you want to manipulate (load/delete/lock/unlock/etc.) - lock/unlock *.* /D will lock/unlock all files (but: DEL *.* /D will NOT delete all files to prevent accidents...; use CLR to erase all files fast...) Console keys: HELP - lists all available turbo DOS commands on screen START - lists the Directory of selected drive ( 1 - 8 ) SELECT - changes the active drive OPTION - goes to cartridge (if enabled) or jumps to the set back-adress Enough said, all the rest can be found in the german documentation. Reitershan got the sourcecode of DOS 2.5 from Atari Deutschland, thats why they made Turbo DOS as compatible to DOS 2.5 as possible... -Andreas Koch. +bf2k+ #14 Posted April 8, 2008 Well, concerning Turbo DOS XL/XE (by Reitershan), these are some of the available commands: Is there an ATR of Turbo DOS XL anywhere?
drac030 #15 Posted April 8, 2008 I think the later versions 3 & X had a Menu.Com program which could be used with them if you had to have a menu, but I never had any use for it. SpartaDOS' MENU.COM is nothing like the DOS 2.5 menu, it is rather a copying tool. In X it allows to copy files over from one floppy to another using only one disk drive (the ordinary COPY command does not allow swapping floppies). there is no version 6 of SpartaDOS ... yet
LYNXGUY #16 Posted April 8, 2008 (edited) OK thanks to all you great people I figured out Turbo DOS XE FMS => format single then INI => to write DOS & DUP With SPARTA DOS 3.2g all but 3 of the extensions are .COM, I do not see any DUP.SYS or SDUP.SYS files. +CharlieChaplin #17 Posted April 8, 2008 Well, Menu.Com is a sort of Filecopier in both SpartaDOs and BeweDOS. If you want to have a DOS menu under Sparta, then simply load the file Dosmenu.Com... (if its on your Sparta disk)... -Andreas Koch.
cas #18 Posted April 8, 2008 OK thanks to all you great people I figured out Turbo DOS XE FMS => format single then INI => to write DOS & DUP With SPARTA DOS 3.2g all but 3 of the extensions are .COM, I do not see any DUP.SYS or SDUP.SYS files. Under Sparta-DOS (and compatible) Dos versions the DOS file is called Xyybb.DOS, where xx is the version number and bb is some modifier. Examples: X32G.DOS - Sparta DOS 3.2 with High Speed SIO X33A.DOS - Sparta DOS 3.3 XBW100.DOS - BW-DOS 1.00 XBW130.DOS - BW-DOS 1.30 XREAL.DOS - Real DOS unlike with the other Atari DOS, it is possible to have multiple DOS Versions on the same disk. Just copy the "*.DOS" files on the disk and then from within Sparta/Bewe/Real-DOS type in "BOOT <filename>", like BOOT X33A.DOS to boot that DOS Version next restart. There is even a boot-menu for Sparta-DOS Versions that will list all "*.DOS" files from the Disk and will present a Menu-Selection at bootime, similar to Game-DOS Systems. With that, you can always boot the "Sparta-Dos-of-the-day". Carsten
sup8pdct #19 Posted April 9, 2008 Super Dos 5.1 I was hoping they all would have a menu like DOS XL, DOS 2.0, DOS 2.5 and so on, or am I missing something ?? Superdos 5.1 is menu driven just like dos 2.X. if you have an xl/xe with 64K or more, the menu is stored under the os rom. it also doesn't destory the contents of ram when the menu system is tansfered. it will support 256K ram for use as a ramdisk. There is an AUX.sys for extra stuff like extra buffers etc and to write a boot game loader. Sbas.sys is renamed to autorun.sys and any locked basic files will appear in a menustyle to load and run. there are instructions for superdos here http://ape.dyndns.org:8083/BRADFORD/ I would be the default owner of superdos but it is in the public domain. +CharlieChaplin #20 Posted April 9, 2008 Yes and No, in Sparta the "DOS.Sys" file has Xyyyy.DOS as a filename, but if I remember correctly someone was searching for a menu for Sparta DOS just like the DUP.SYS in DOS 2.0 and 2.5 - and thats what the file DOSMENU.COM is for... to give Sparta DOS a menu similar to DUP.SYS... -Andreas Koch. P.S.: Attached are Sparta DOS 3.2f and 3.2g, you will find the DOSMENU.COM on side B...
