Favorite Controller for the 7800

I just got my first 7800 the other day and my controllers are shot. It came with the Proline controllers and also a semi-functioning Amiga Powerstick. Anyway it looks like I'm gonna have to get some new controllers so i thought I'd ask you guys your opinion on what controlllers you like and why. I'm sorta leaning toward the CX78s. But what are your thoughts? :)

Soldering Iron and an NES controller. I made one and it is much much better. Get the old NES controllers with the through hole chips and it should be a breeze.

Unfortunately I bought after market controllers with an epoxied SMD chip. The first one I had to solder directly to the traces. It works.. but was kind of a pain. I have a second one which I plan on drilling holes and soldering to some small pads on the PCB.

You will need parts from your 7800 joysticks to do this... the cord and the two resistors off the board.

Here is a link to the mod here on AtariAge for a NES-004E controller with 2 resistors on the board:

http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/nes_...l?SystemID=2600

I had a problem with this one, since my NES-004 pad had no resistors on the board. After some hunting, I found this modified set of instructions:

http://www.geocities.com/gjp57/nes-7800.txt

With this set I was able to finish the conversion.

Here are a couple topics that discuss the problem:

http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...l=nes+resistors

http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...l=nes+resistors

As well as this post that shows exactly what to do with the resistors on the board:

Hope this helps!

Quick question about this. if you don't care about both buttons working on 2600 games do you have to have the resisters. that is what they are for isn't it?

Correct, the resistors are only needed in the 7800 conversion.

Here are instructions for a 2600 only conversion:

http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/St...058/2600nes.txt

I have not done this conversion, but it should be simpler.

I do recommend doing the 7800 conversion if you have or plan to get a 7800, since the controller will work on the 2600 and 7800 (games that require 2 buttons).

I modded a Radica Space Invader PnP game and its my favorite controller for the 7800 and the ColecoVision. I've also used a modded NES pad and that's probably my second choice. You can also make adapters for Genesis controllers as well.

Where would i find info on the NES pad to 7800 conversion? I bet they'd be cheaper to get my hands on than CX78s

Where in the world are you?

looks like a British plate on that microbus.

If you are in the UK, I think I can find a cx78 in my box of spares, also I may be selling my Radica Space Invaders Conversion soon (building my own custom stick with Arcade (Sanwa) parts :D )

PM me if you are interested

Bumping this topic since it fits perfectly. I was just wondering what everybody's favorite 7800 controller is. I've just been using various 2600-compatible sticks and pads since I haven't had time to solder anything up yet. Genesis pads, genesis arcade stick, and a Wico Command (bat-style). So far, it's a toss-up between a good sega pad & the Wico, each being good for different games. I want to be able to play my copy of Choplifter for 7800 though, so what's your favorite 7800 input method?

Just do yourself a favor and goto best electronics and invest in a pair of europad, u wont regret it.

Well... are they better than modified NES controllers? The design of those euro gamepads just looks so funky and uncomfortable. I love a good gamepad, but the buttons on those look too spaced-apart, and the grooves they're set in look uncomfortable to rest your finger on for a long time.

The whole idea of the grooves is that they make it more comfortable

The rounded edges make it much more comfortable to hold than the square NES pad and the thumb stick is brilliant for stuff like driving games or anything where you don't want to be holding your finger down on the joypad.

I think the european 7800 controllers are alright, but definately not better than the NES pads. In my opinion the buttons are placed too far apart, and feel a bit "mushy" (even on NOS pads). I like the D-pad though.
