Microbus_a_move Posted April 9, 2008 Share Posted April 9, 2008 I just got my first 7800 the other day and my controllers are shot. It came with the Proline controllers and also a semi-functioning Amiga Powerstick. Anyway it looks like I'm gonna have to get some new controllers so i thought I'd ask you guys your opinion on what controlllers you like and why. I'm sorta leaning toward the CX78s. jamesk Posted April 9, 2008 Share Posted April 9, 2008 Soldering Iron and an NES controller. I made one and it is much much better. Get the old NES controllers with the through hole chips and it should be a breeze. Unfortunately I bought after market controllers with an epoxied SMD chip. The first one I had to solder directly to the traces. It works.. but was kind of a pain. I have a second one which I plan on drilling holes and soldering to some small pads on the PCB. Here is a link to the mod here on AtariAge for a NES-004E controller with 2 resistors on the board: http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/nes_...l?SystemID=2600 I had a problem with this one, since my NES-004 pad had no resistors on the board. After some hunting, I found this modified set of instructions: http://www.geocities.com/gjp57/nes-7800.txt With this set I was able to finish the conversion. Correct, the resistors are only needed in the 7800 conversion. I do recommend doing the 7800 conversion if you have or plan to get a 7800, since the controller will work on the 2600 and 7800 (games that require 2 buttons). Prodos8 Posted April 10, 2008 Share Posted April 10, 2008 I modded a Radica Space Invader PnP game and its my favorite controller for the 7800 and the ColecoVision. Rex Dart Posted July 12, 2010 Share Posted July 12, 2010 Bumping this topic since it fits perfectly. I was just wondering what everybody's favorite 7800 controller is. I've just been using various 2600-compatible sticks and pads since I haven't had time to solder anything up yet. Genesis pads, genesis arcade stick, and a Wico Command (bat-style). So far, it's a toss-up between a good sega pad & the Wico, each being good for different games. Well... are they better than modified NES controllers? The design of those euro gamepads just looks so funky and uncomfortable. I love a good gamepad, but the buttons on those look too spaced-apart, and the grooves they're set in look uncomfortable to rest your finger on for a long time. The_Laird Posted July 12, 2010 Share Posted July 12, 2010 The whole idea of the grooves is that they make it more comfortable The rounded edges make it much more comfortable to hold than the square NES pad and the thumb stick is brilliant for stuff like driving games or anything where you don't want to be holding your finger down on the joypad. I think the european 7800 controllers are alright, but definately not better than the NES pads. In my opinion the buttons are placed too far apart, and feel a bit "mushy" (even on NOS pads).
