Champ Games....

Recommended Posts

Anyone still have the old dos Champ Games, Champ Kong, etc. etc. I had almost all of them until we moved and I lost the cd they were backed up on. Along with my backups of Commander Keen and a few others, the Commander Keen series was np to get as ID had them on their website full versions updated for windows.

Thanks

Visit this website.

Seen this page before, most of the download links don't work. Always get redirected to a page that says the following:

Error 404 - Not found

Die angegebene Seite konnte nicht gefunden werden.

And I don't speak German :)

This guy's still around... he posts on AtariAge from time to time. He even created a really good conversion of Ladybug for the Atari 2600!

Didn't know that, maybe he'll get some joy knowing that his old "Champ" games are still loved and played.

Hi there -

This was quite a surprise to see someone posting about the old Champ games. It's really nice to know that someone is still getting some enjoyment out of them - it certainly was a joy making them.

Have fun!

- John

Try the website www.dosgames.com.

I think they still have links, as well as champ-em-games website.

All of the Champ Games (even old-old versions) can be downloaded at:

Champ Games download section

If there is any interest, I could post the downloads for the unreleased versions of Frog-em and Burger Climb. Both are about 50% done (non-playable). I'll have to dig through my old code to see if I can track them down...

How well do they work on an NT version of Windows? I've noticed that roughly half the DOS-based games I try to play on my Windows XP laptop crash 'n burn before they can even begin. Yes, I know I could just get DOS Box, but having to hunt down MS-DOS and the emulator to run it would be kind of a pain in the rump.

I had to use DOSBox to run them in Vista.

Id prob do the same in XP

That would be great!! as far as the website, I get redirected to a error 404 File not found on most of the games when I click to download them.

Any other DL links that anyone knows of? I've even tried from a friends house, and still keep getting 404 error on that one page.

Thanks

Hi there -

I haven't spoken to Manuel in a while (he's the one who runs the Champ-em website) - I'm not sure why the links don't work. When I get home I can either post the downloads here (they're fairly small) or if you want you can shoot me a PM with your email and I can send them that way. It may take me a while to find them (it's been 10 years!) but I know I have them archived somewhere...

Sup man.. as you know I've been a fan of the Champ ports since you started posting them on the net. But yeah it's been a while since I've tried them.. and I sure as heck don't know where I've put them all over the years. If you could repost the binaries that'd be great! :D And, I'll see what I can figure out about playing them in NT based systems (i.e. XP) as far as if there's any easy fixes with the compatibility settings off the bat.

I agree with the some of the others, DOSBox is the best bet and seems to work great when using in VIsta and/or XP. Personally I play them on a old 486dx4 running msdos 6.1 and windows 3.11 (I've kept this system running all these years just so I can for sure play all the old dos games I still love.)

Maybe the server only allows downloads from some locations, I've tried everyone of them from 3 different ISP's so far, and always get redirected to a file not found error

That sucks! I could upload the games if johnnywc doesn't mind...

Well- I found Burger Climb & Frog-em...

Both are about 40% done; unplayable, but a good peek at what could have been. I also found some preliminary alphas for Lady Bug-em (aka Lady Bug) and Star Fortress (aka Star Castle) that showed some good progress. Unfortunately, I can't find a couple proof-of-concept demos I had done for Moon Buggy (Moon Patrol) and Tutank-em (Tutankham) that were pretty cool (my first attempts at parallax and tile scrolling, respectively).

Anyway - got a little carried away there... :)

Enjoy!

BURGERC.zip

Frogem.zip

PS - These don't have proper installation programs - they'll have to be copied into a directory and a shortcut setup (I did have the icons however)...

I found the original disks - here are the binaries:

I'll see if I can find the Burger Climb & Frog-em prototypes...

Enjoy!

Thanks! I just played a round of Champ Kong.. it runs fine in XP. There is zero need to use DOSBOX although i guess if you really want to go through all that you can.

All I did was set the compatibility of the executable to windows95 and it ran fine. Amazing work you did there man.. still plays great to this day. :)

Ooooh...I used to play the hell out of these. Especially Champ Kong. Utterly brilliant.

Guess I need to get parallels running on my mac so I can play them again.
