My power adaptor spewed fire at me!

OK, I'm having trouble getting this thing to work. I just purchased a 4-port power adaptor thingy that you need to have. When I plugged something in twice, a few sparks shot out of it. But then, when I got everything plugged in with no game and turned it on, the screen went from static to colored static. Is that what's supposed to happen? I know the sparks aren't supposed to be flying out from where I put the wire from the console to the adaptor, but everything seems to be working OK. Now, if only I had a game to test it on. In other words: HELP!

Actually the sparks are fairly normal if you plug the power in to the wall first. Usually I connect everything else first and then plug the power cord into the wall last.
