Did anyone ever think there were archers in Dragonfire?

Recommended Posts

This might seem like a weird topic, but hey, it's something from my youth.

I remember seeing screenshots of other versions of Dragonfire in magazines, and there were archers that shot from the tower.

Seems that these never made it into the 2600 version.

You can see screenshots for other consoles here, that have the archers:

When I was a kid, I thought that if you just got far enough, the archers would show up.

Anyone else have the same experience as me? I got farther and farther, but never saw them.

Were the archers/arrows in the source code, and just disabled?

Or were they completely scrapped?

Dragonfire is one of my favorite games of all time. Seeing the screenshots of the other versions, I had wished so badly that I had an Intellivision or ColecoVision!

But then I did get each of those in turn, and found that I actually liked the game play of the 2600 the best! Plus, to me, the treasures look far better on the 2600 than on either of those other consoles.

I do know that the Intellivision and Atari versions were developed simultaneously, so there must have been a decision made that only the Intellivision version would have the archer.

As to why that decision was made, or at what point in the process, I don't know.

I have the Colecovision Dragonfire, and it has the archer,a troll that patrolls the treasure rooms, and a few other extras.Between the 2600,INTV,CV,the CV version is the best graphics wise, and so is Fathom. And yeah, the treasure room looks brighter in the 2600 version.Oh yes,the drawbridge retracts back and forth on the CV version, adding to the already crazy difficulty.

My friend had the CoCo version and that's where I first played it. I love the game. I had an idea for Dragonfire II, but don't have the skills to make it. In Dragonfire II there would be 3 or 4 different screens to make it through.

So the archers shot arrows at you in those other versions?

After a few levels.

In CV version, you can play with the archer shooting right away, depends on which skill leval you set the game at,and theres at least 9 skill levels on the CV version IIRC.

You're right, of course. I should have said, "At higher levels." That would have covered it more clearly.

Cool game, I have the 2600 and CV version and the CV version is probably my favorite.

The CV version has extra perils as mentioned above but the 2600 version is still a lot of fun.

If you set the difficulty up on the CV or play for a while: The drawbridge by the entrance opens and closes, the archer fires arrows and the Troll inside the dragon room start happening\showing up.

I just wish there were more screens! The CV version is like impossibly hard IMO.On one game level, you have the retracting drawbridge, the dragonfire,a troll guard in the treasure room, and the archers arrows coming at you!I've never gotten far in this game on any system.

Dragonfire for the CoCo is one of the few games that switched color modes on the fly to get more than 4 colors on the screen at once. I think it was the only CoCo cartridge game that did that.
