edweird13
I just bought a 128 in 1 USB Multicart and was wondering if there is one big zip file with all the 8-bit conversions. I have found some of them but not all. Thanks

Lynxpro
2 versions of Crystal Castles? I'm curious how they ported the second version if it's the later XEGS version since it required 64K RAM. Are they using the extra onboard RAM of the AtariMax SD Cartridge Adapter or did they figure out how to massively bankswitch the sucker? Still, I remember an A8 thread stating that version would be impossible to add Trak-Ball support to since it's so CPU intense [that the CPU is constantly tracking Bentley Bear and if you used a Trak-Ball in Trak-Ball mode, Bentley Bear would go through the walls]... I just played the first couple of levels of the A8 XE version from Atarimania and checked for writes above 16K in Altirra. It only seems to use an extra 256 bytes so I think Classics will have relocated them elsewhere when he did the 5200 port. Generally XE carts will be very difficult if not impossible to port, but in this case it seems the XE version was not so different from the 16K original. While you can make use of the RAM in the Ultimate SD there are some hefty restrictions with it. You access it in 8K blocks, the read and write addresses are different and writing using indexed addressing is unreliable. There may be some applications which can make use of this, but it's probably not for A8 ports where you try and disturb as little of the original code as possible.

+playsoft
you just "owe" us your remaining A8 Conversion from back in the day This year it's a big push on AB! and I'm trying not to get distracted with other things. +playsoft
something like this would be awesome on the device You can load from the SD card to the Ultimate's RAM under control of the 6502. It's not quick enough for full frame rate high resolution video but something should be possible.

There may be some applications which can make use of this, but it's probably not for A8 ports where you try and disturb as little of the original code as possible. That sounds promising. I'd love to see it play with the Trak-Ball, both on the 5200 and the A8. I know Dan Kramer would love to see both done as well. As for the 2600 version, I wonder if the DPC would have enough juice to control Bentley Bear through the Trak-Ball. Mr. Spice posted a video on using an ARM in 2600 home brews but that kinda would be "cheating" on the era to do that unless the ARM was emulating the DPC. But not to go off on a tangent... I think another worthy game to convert would be Slime. http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-slime_4722.html It has Trak-Ball support built in [at least for CX-22/CX-80 on A8]. However, the A8 version requires 24K RAM so that might require some exotic bankswitching on the 5200 [i'm assuming]. Since the CX-53 Trak-Ball is the 5200's greatest asset, what other A8 games [commercial, public domain/freeware/shareware or hacks] would be great to have on the 5200 that would be appropriate for that controller? I was disappointed to learn that Crack'ed apparently wasn't ported to the XEGS back in the day; that game screams out for Trak-Ball support [on the 7800]!
