Star Ship

Recommended Posts

I found Star Ship today (I didn't have it). I thought it was a pirate cart at first because the text is yellow and huge and the background is all black. Are there any other carts in this style? Why the strange look on a 1977 Atari cart? Nice find for me (I also finally found Burgertime today).

Ranger - yep - there's a few carts like that - check the atariage photo section... The star ship "Yellow" is listed as a three - but I've never seen one in the wild! Good find!

I dunno know why but I never minded that cart. Sure its not the funnest game in the world. But keep in mind they were just learning not just how to program the Atari...but how to program video games as a whole in general. Obviously someone had a vision to do a peudo 3-d space game and given what they had to work with... Its not too bad. I love the fact that in one game you are in control of a huge planet... (If only you weren't so slow) And those back ground sound effects are some of the best, funkiest sound effects ever on the Atari. I'd much rather play Outer Space...then say..... Laser Blast.

2600 Starshi* (1977) is based on the arcade Starshi*. Remember that 1977 is the year Star Wars came out .. so a 3D space game could have been better than that! 1979 is when Atari released Star Raiders for the Atari 800 which is 100x more intricate than Starshi*. Starshi* missed the mark in the arcades and at home. But it was the third 2600 cart that Atari released so there was not much choice back then.

Just because Star Ship has the part number CX-2603 doesn't mean it was the third game released. In fact the first nine releases were released simultaneously.
