Major_Havoc #3 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) PLAY Great Games like Donkey Kong, PAC MAN, Centipede, Asteroids, Missile Command, Street Fighter, Space Invaders and thousands more!!! 11DVD set for only $35 shipped within the US. What a major ripoff Edited June 2, 2008 by Major_Havoc
+FujiSkunk #4 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) In all fairness, $35 to cover the cost of 11 blank DVD's and the time spent burning those discs is not that extravagant. However, in this particular case, it's still a wee bit illegal, so AtariAge really isn't the best place to advertise. Just curious as to why do so many people sell these sets on the internet and not get into any trouble. I do appreciate the advice and adjusted the post. In all fairness, I see these sets selling for $50 everywhere and $35 is more than fair for shipping, the cost of the 11 DVDs and the time. djpubba #6 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) Same reason zillions of people exceed the speed limit while driving. It's illegal, but the chances of them getting caught is low enough that they're willing to take the chance. Edited June 2, 2008 by djpubba

Makes sense but I think that they are a little crazy promoting their websites which has everything for sale. It seems like they are pushing it a bit. Thanks for the info! I figured that if you can buy this stuff from all of these websites that it is not illegal but better to be Safe than Sorry!

Thanks for the info! I figured that if you can buy this stuff from all of these websites that it is not illegal but better to be Safe than Sorry! Some people like living on the edge, never assuming they'll be the ones to get caught. To be fair (again), many people here, myself included, distinguish between "illegal" and "unethical", and we don't lose a lot of sleep over things like distributing ROM images. However, the bottom line is that it is in fact illegal, and many companies are still actively defending their copyrights. This is further complicated by the fact that some of AtariAge's practices are in a legal gray area, and being on good terms with Infogrames/Atari has been a big factor in keeping the site as is. We don't want to promote any behavior that might jeopardize that relationship.
CudaSales #9 Posted June 3, 2008 If you don't mind I have another question along the same lines. I have recently been re-living my past and playing some old DOS games from the 80's and 90's that I had so much fun playing back then. I noticed a lot of sites that have these games for FREE to download and they refer to them as "Abandonware" Are these sites along the same fine line as distributing the MAME ROMS? Thanks Again! Red 5 #10 Posted June 3, 2008 If you don't mind I have another question along the same lines. Kind of. Many of the ROMS are from companies that no loger exist or care. A lot of the ROMS are of games (most of the good ones) from companies that not only still exist, but are making money off of the games still. Compilations, arcade cabs and franchises (like Mario, Donkey Kong, etc.) For instance, there is a Galaga / Ms. Pac-Man cab in every arcade still left in America. That cab came out 5 or 6 years ago, so yeah, I would thing somebody would be pissed about people selling their game for profit. I would think the same not just of Namco, but Sega, Konami, Midway, Taito, SNK, Capcom etc. On the other hand, if you wanted to give out the 'Table Tennis' ROM by Nutting Associates, I bet nobody would give a rats ass. I am sure that would be considered abandonware as the company probably no longer exists and nobody is left with the rites to it (or would want them.) Try to sell Pac-Man or Donkey Kong though, if someone notices, they will probably be pissed. Also, I'm not trying to be a dick, but you do know that people can buy that x-arcade stick that your selling for the same exact price brand new from the manufacturer?
