edweird13 #1 Posted June 6, 2008 But it is a victim of lightning and has serious burn in issues. It does come on but has a high pitched whine and the monitor comes on. Any ideas what could be wrong? It's my first cab.

supercat #5 Posted June 6, 2008 Yeah the tube lights up it sounds like a game related noise but it wont coin up. A high-pitched whine from a monitor is often a sign of stress in the horizontal flyback circuit. Think of the horizontal flyback circuit as being like a fairly massive spring-loaded hammer that is repeatedly pulled back and released; when it reaches the end of travel it hits the short end of a lever; the long end has a small ball which will get knocked away at high speed. If things are in proper balance, nearly all of the energy from the swinging hammer will be transfered to the small ball. If things are not in proper balance, some of the energy from each flyback pulse will have to go somewhere else. This will often increase stress on the components, causing things to become even more imbalanced until something breaks outright.

Sounds like the board but check p/s voltages first, if ok then reseat the board connections, if no go, then remove and reseat socketed chips on the board. If no go then it's probably the board. they can be repaired or just buy another on ebay. Either way what a deal for $15!
Brian Deuel #7 Posted June 8, 2008 Great deal! One of the few classics I never owned (other than a waterlogged cocktail with a rusty PCB in it). Still want one someday.

The best thing you can do with limited knowledge of monitor repair is what I do....since I have limited knowledge of monitor repair This is what I do when I need a monitor repair..... Find a crappy game for sale on craigslist for $100 or whatever the price may be, sometimes cheaper but make sure the monitor works. Just unplug the plastic monitor connections (not the suction cup anode connector, thats the one that can shock you but you don't need to un hook it) Un hook the brackets and pull the monitor out, do the same thing to Galaxian but then put the working monitor in the Galaxian machine. Of course be careful what you touch and where you are waiving your screwdriver around. Then to make your money back sell all the parts on Ebay from the game you bought. The PCB, Bezel, Control Panel, Marquee, etc.. should all get you close to your money back. You can even sell some of the internel parts but you might want to save them for back ups if they are compatible. Right now there is a Commando game locally here in MN for $100 that I would use, find out what is in your area....
