Chimp Plays Mrs Pacman

Recommended Posts

I'm not buying it - this falls under the 1000 chimps typing for a thousand years scenario..

Yeah, it's bs. Just watch which way the chimp is moving the stick and watch the screen and you can easily see the chimp is just pushing in random directions.

I was just playing Miss Pac-Man yesterday on my SNES.

FAKE

1. Some of the shots was the chip controlling Ms-PacMan

2. The camera did too many close ups which was too proffesional.

3. When the "trainer" got excited the Chip moved away and returned. Meaning the trainer probably got the primate to do that one action for the shot. That is probably somebodies pet and they did it on purpose

4. This is a Genesis arcade stick that is being used from the shots, you can see the logo.

5. It is too proffesional. The whole thing was probably enhanced or setup. Heck they could have had somebody in the background playing with a extension cable, or remote. Even a video adapter?

I don't know if this video is fake or not but I wasn't very impressed with the game play either way. I think a primate could probably be taught to play this game and better than what the video shows. But I question the use of the Ms. Pac Man version (which is why I asked which version it was above). The scrolling maze adds an extra complication to the training. I have no experience with chimps but lots with dogs. Animals have a WYSIWYG way of thinking. If they don't see it (or smell it or hear it) then it doesn't exist in their universe. The scrolling maze hides parts of the maze and ghosts, which I think would totally confuse a chimp. A Ms. Pac Man version with a non-scrolling maze would be a much better choice for a legitimate experiment. In fact the original Pac Man would be even better because of the stationary fruit. The moving fruit in Ms. Pac Man is another added complication. Basically, stationary objects (dots) are good, moving objects (ghosts) are bad. Moving fruit doesn't fit this logic.

...and here I thought my "Aw that's soo cute!" response was going to sound too scientific... :P

They should have set the maze to "mini" for the chimp - it is an option on that version.

This is just what we needed - now the market is going to get flooded with "casual primate" games, which won't sell well...
