Im about to throw my atari in the dishwasher. A few questions first.

Recommended Posts

Im about to throw my atari's plastic case in the dishwasher(only the plastic don't worry), and I want to know, will it mess up the paint on the plastic?

Also, my atari didn't have stickers on it when i got it, so I don't have to worry about that.

Last thing, inside of my atari is a piece of old paper taped to a metal box, it's a light sixer with a channel select switch, does this mean anything? (the paper says "99 01100570" then has a blue mark)

Sorry for asking so many questions, but using the search feature I have found many people that wash their systems in the dishwasher. No one, though, says if they dry it in one, if it messes up the paint, or if I should wash it by itself or with dishes.

You don't have to answer all of these questions, but answering any would help.

Wash it by itself, on the top rack (dirty side down, of course). Do NOT leave it in during the heated drying cycle -- deselect this option, if your machine allows it.

Other than the paper label on the bottom, there is a small chance that the gold metallic trim in the Atari logo might be damaged. The woodgrain finish and orange trim paint are very durable and should not be affected.

I ended up having to wash it with other dishes, but it turned out perfect!

LOL

I'm going to try washing my toaster in the bathtub, while I'm taking a bath.

Wow...but let me know how it turned out for you. I *might* attempt this myself, but I'm afraid to take apart my Atari 2600 to take off the top case. It would look really snazzy, though..

I knew my atari was dirty, but I didn't think it was too dirty. After I put it in the dishwasher, I realized how dirty it was. Except for faded paint, it looks brand new.

Even the ribs feel different.

The reason for washing it alone, is that dishwashers recycle the water, and don't get hot enough to sterilize. I wouldn't want to eat off of dishes that were washed in water that came off of most of the game consoles I've seen... :woozy:

When I got a dusty old VCS from the flea market, I took it all apart and handwashed the case like I would wash the dinner dishes. I used a toothbrush to scrub out the gunk from the ribs and any other little cracks. It came out looking like a different machine.

Be careful what you put in the dishwasher... the detergent is harsh and can ruin plastic. I washed a baseball cap once in mine and it utterly destroyed its color.

On the other hand, it made it look well worn if you like that look :)

Don't worry, he washed the dishes again in the shower.
