Gamecube games better on Wii?

Recommended Posts

Quick question! Do Gamecube games look better when played on a Wii console? Is there any upscaling etc? I've just been watching a demo of The Legend of Zelda-The Wind Waker for the Gamecube and it looks pretty good.

The Windwaker looks really good on the Wii, but it is the same as with a GCN with similar connections.. ie the GCN component cable = Wii component.

IMHO the game looks good because of the art design.

I asked a similar question about a HArry Potter game, because the graphics on the gamecube weren't all that great; they skip, not smooth and just plain hard on the eyes. I never tested it personally, but was advised that the game would play the same on the Wii as it does on the GC because it shifts mode to run that particular game.

The Wii is a enhanced GameCube, GameCube games run identically on it since its basically the same hardware.

The biggest advantage is easily available component cables, they were rare for the GameCube (Only being available through Nintendo directly), and have become pricey the last few years since they were discontinued), and the last few runs of the console didn't even have the component port on the console to use the cable. Now you can walk into anywhere that sells videogames, and buy a component cable for it for as low as $10 if you go with a 3rd party brand.

I play all Cube games on the Wii nowadays, but more out of pure laziness, not because it feels improved or so.

BTW: Is there a way to return into Wii mode without turning the thing off? Even the RESET button on the console will just reset the Cube game.

Nope. The Wii is in GC mode at that point and is (in almost all respects) a true Gamecube.

The nice thing about playing GC games on the Wii is that I believe it upscales all games to 480p, not just those that originally supported it on the GC.

I don't think that's actually the case. One nice "surprise" for me on the Wii was the component output made my GameCube games generally look better than the composite approach I'd been using. Not always though ... some games like Starsky and Hutch and Ultimate Spider-Man didn't seem to support progressive scan and they looked like crap, IMO.

Just about everything else in my collection supported progressive scan though.

All the GC games are playing in 480p on my TV as I can check that through the TV itself. I assume it just upscales games that didn't natively support progressive scan.

Nope, the Wii doesn't upscale GameCube games. Play something like Midway Arcade Treasures or the Resident Evil games besides RE4, that were just 480i on the GC and it would still be interlaced on the Wii. The Wii isn't deinterlacing non progressive scan GameCube games.

Perhaps there's a setting on your tv that is doing that to 480i content?

I thought I read someplace awhile back that GC games load faster on the Wii than on a GC. Am I mistaken?

Who knows on that one, perhaps they do. It's a minor one though I'd say, I can't notice any differences. You can see different load times on something like a Xbox 360 just by comparing systems with different drive manufacturers, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii loaded games faster.

If it does, it's not fast enough where I'd think one could notice it, I know I can't tell.

The answer is plain and simple. No. The GCN will play games better then the Wii since it is the original Hardware. There is no visual enhancements when using the Wii. In order to see the diffrence you will need to have a GCN side by side a Wii flickering back and forth threw gameplay. For all the marbles get a GCN but if you just don't care stay with a Wii.

GCN is for standard gamers and Wii is for people who wants the remote thingy.....at least until the PS3 add-on which you can plug into the PSX socket. Wii is also a cheap excuss for a TV kid toy.

The Wii is a enhanced GameCube,

The Wii is not a Gamecube enhanced. It is Nintendo instead of providing another add-on for there system they just decided to build this thing and call it another system. Everything a Wii can a GCN can do also. In short they lie.

I have both hooked up and they look exactly the same on the same TV. The console supports progressive scan output only in 480p-enabled GameCube titles such as Animal Crossing. You can do the same thing on the Gamecube for those titles. Its the TV not the console.

It in no way is an "enhanced" gamecube. Nothing loads faster and nothing "looks better".

It does nothing to 'enhance' the Gamecube experience, in fact some Gamecube products will not work on the Wii such as the great Game Boy player.

I play the Gamecube games on the Wii mainly because I dont feel like playing it on the Gamecube, but I'll never dump my Gamecube.

(I'm not bashing the Wii. I love it but lets talk a little reality here)

Red Queen, you don't know what your talking about. The GameCube doesn't play GameCube games better than the Wii, since the GameCube hardware basically exist within the Wii. The GameCube experience is identical between the two besides not being able to use some GameCube accessories like the GameBoy Player.

The Wii is for people who like great games. Games like Mario Kart Wii and Metroid Prime 3 are some of the best games of recent years. It's a great console.

And the Wii is a enhanced GameCube. A GameCube can't do everything a Wii can do, even though the Wii's foundation is basically GameCube hardware. The Wii has had many improvements done compared to a GameCube that makes it a much more advanced platform when developers take advantage of what's there.

It has a significantly faster processor speed, more and faster memory, internal storage, built in WiFi, USB ports, and a SD card slot to name just some of the many enhancements done. At it's core, its very similar to the GameCube, but it's considered 1.5 to 2 times more powerful than a GameCube, and can do things in games that a GameCube can't due to its improved system architecture.

You misunderstood, the word enhanced was used in terms to the technology in the system. Things like the processor are basically GameCube hardware that have been tweaked and enhanced, and now offer faster clock speeds and such. It had nothing to do with how the Wii handles backwards compatibility, besides stating that it basically remains a GameCube at heart, and thus plays GameCube titles nearly perfectly.

Oh, well that's different then. I thought R.Q. was either a teenager, is using English as a second language, or both. There's even less coherence than when I know that _I_ am not coherent, and I at least attempt to give my posts at least one proofread before pressing 'Post'. :D That and Firefox does spellcheck. My spells are at least 90% more effective now. :D

Mostly I just gloss over R.Q.'s posts until they are unreadable... Anyway...

In response to the original question, I don't think it makes any difference. The architecture is pretty much identical between the Wii and the GCube. I would recommend keeping a cube laying around for the following reasons:

System is (still) a tank. They have that unit bolted and shielded till doomsday. It should hold up to a lot of general collector's use before it dies.

System is dirt cheap. When Game(rob)Stop are selling used ones for ~$30 you know the demand for the hardware is non-existent. Pick up a nice spare today.

Supports the Gameboy Player. As Stan "excelsior!" Lee would say, "'Nuff Said."

Mind you, I'm not a willing (or motivated) participant in the world of Hi-Def anything. I have a rather crappy TV and I pipe composite video through my VCR so I can see a picture using RF. I bought the TV used about 4 years ago and I will replace it when it dies. It's the only way I'm going to be motivated to spend the mad money they want for these new TVs. Even then, I plan to upgrade to S-Video if possible since I have cables already for most of my systems already.

That's the beauty of the ignore button! A signal to noise ratio that low is too low to waste my time reading.

Someone thought he was Rugal Sizzler from DP. I think he's a guy from CAG who's been banned several times using several names. Of course he may be both! But his style of posting is very unusual and normally doesn't make a lick of sense.
