Cybergoth #1 Posted June 19, 2008 Hi there! Just wondering what other above average side-scrolling platform games exist on the A8. Basically I want to see what's possible on the platform regarding sidescrolling jump'n'runs (Giana/Mario/Mayhem style) and jump'n'shooters (Contra/Ghosts'n'Goblins/Rastan et al.) I assume besides Crownland, there should be another handful of games worth checking out. I just want to get a feeling of what can be done here so I hope you have a few suggestions for me to check out Greetings, Manuel

There is no compareable game. Games of that genre with more common techniques are: Cavernia Herbert & Herbert 2 (which I like much) Schreckenstein (very good for 2 players) Spelunker (of course a very nice platfomer) Wloczykij (nice appoach, horrible controls)
Cybergoth #3 Posted June 19, 2008 Don't worry, I realize that Crownland probably is the first of a new generation and currently marks the end of the spectrum. Thanks for the suggestions I'll have a look at them
carmel_andrews #4 Posted June 19, 2008 Cybergoth...Gimme Rastan on the A8...I think it was a better game then Contra/Gryzor on the c64 (though the konami games on the c64 and rastan share the same music track...weird)
twh/f2 #5 Posted June 19, 2008 I vote for Schreckenstein. It's the by far the game i played most AND is really outstanding. imho best and unbeaten 2player-simulatenous action game ever. it is not really comparable to Crownload due to the different concept. but technically it's very sophisticated. Even nowadays when I meet my parents or my sister over christmas, eastern and such, I hook up the atari just that we play it again until we completed the game. which usually takes only 2-4 tries grtx, \twh
Tezz #6 Posted June 19, 2008 yep Schreckenstein is one of my all times favs too, a great game to play in two players especially. and Spelunker too. Cavernia is closest in the genre I guess to Crownland. Pretty nice game, I bought it and have never completed it.
Heaven/TQA #7 Posted June 19, 2008 Well, Schreckenstein really rules... love Peter Finzel's productions, same goes to the mentioned Spelunker...but there are not many platformers like Mario imho... Flip Flop, Rainbow Walker, Miner series etc are all plattformers but there are not many like Mario & co. ps. Herbert & Herbert 2 are so cool AMC games...the gfx is good! Poison #8 Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) hi, Crowland is in fact unique game, but Ninja Commando from Zeppelin Games, Yogi's Great Escape, Twilight World, Predator, Fred are very nice side-scrl. games too. Much better than Wloczyki. Edited June 19, 2008 by Poison

Dracon #10 Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) What about (old but quite good) BC's Quest for Tires, anyway? Edited June 19, 2008 by Dracon
TMR #11 Posted June 19, 2008 Well, i'd second Cavernia and Ninja Commando personally and i quite liked Twilight World and although it's not a brilliant game as such, Tusker isn't too bad.
carmel_andrews #13 Posted June 19, 2008 Miker...I don't quite think that Bros counts (apart from being a basic Mario type game) as unlike the other games mentioned here...Bros only scrolls in the next screen in play and keeps doing it till you reach the end of the level (unless you've a version of bros that's different from the one i've seen)

carmel_andrews #15 Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) Oh sorry...I Guess he was taking the pee out of the game...no wonder why it was written in Turbobasic (with some ML routines i guess) Edited June 19, 2008 by carmel_andrews
emkay #16 Posted June 19, 2008 What about (old but quite good) BC's Quest for Tires, anyway? BC's Quest for Tires is a great fun game, but not from the same genre.

Shamus #18 Posted June 20, 2008 This got me to thinking that oddly enough that there aren't too many run 'n jump titles for the A8--at least that I remember. Out of the ones I remember there's the too difficult Snokie (horizontal scroller w/peguin hero), the utterly bizarre Mission on Thunderhead (OK, it's kind of a hybrid, sosume ) and the excellent Spelunker. Ah yes, now they're coming back--Cohen's Towers (bleh), Ghost Chasers (okayish), Burt's Brew Biz (same), Mountain King (fun!)... I can think of more but they're almost all single screen run 'n jumpers like (er) Jumpman, Hard Hat Mack, Donkey Kong, Mr. Robot, Nuclear Nick, Mouse Trap (horrible, but it kept you coming back for some reason) etc. etc.
Poison #19 Posted June 20, 2008 and there is another one side-scrl. game:) Domain of the Undead. Its such as Ghost and Goblins, but very stupid:)
carmel_andrews #20 Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) Twilight Zoner...Might have a point there...but no excuse for the fact that it was programmed in a 'basic' (whereas almost everything else was done in ML) As for Poison's remark about Domain O/T Undead....I think Red Rat tried to rush the game to cash in on the 'G&G' genre...(either that or they hired a speccy/c64 coder to program the game on the A8, failing that they hired 'Steven McIllwie' probably the worst programmer to grace the A8) Edited June 20, 2008 by carmel_andrews
Tezz #21 Posted June 20, 2008 We wrote a jump and collect game in Atari Basic called cave crisis back in 1987. I'll have to dig that out and image it, I remember we included it on a disk with a missile command clone done the same year which was compiled turbo basic. 21 years... time flys. Tezz #23 Posted June 21, 2008 Your site seems to be down today Kaz? My memory must be faltering, Cave Crisis is more of a jump and avoid rather than collect! it's been funny to see this again after so many years!
