2600 serial #s

can anyone shed some light on the 2600's serial #s. my heavy's serial # is 16549F. does that mean it was the 16,549th made and what does the letter stand for. i seen one while ago with 3218 and thats all, no letter. i know there really isn't an answer for atari's #s but does anyone have a clue?
