Alone In The Dark (Not as bad as most will have you believe).

Recommended Posts

I pre-order the game three months ago, and even with the bad reviews I decided to buy it and try it for myself; thank god I did. I don't understand why the controls are causing such a problem (if you have played Resident Evil, they are the same). If you want a review, this is the one to go to, it's pretty fair in my opinion. http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3168398&p=4

Though no one element is particularly polished, the game's plenty varied, and it happily defies genre characterization wherever it can -- rappelling, racing segments, PaRappa the Rapper dancing segments, Guitar Hero segments, scab eating contests, jerky juggling, clown poking, cat skinning, weight lifting, grocery shopping, Jell-O snorkeling, and a handful of great ideas keep things fresh.

All I can say is its far better then the same crap we've been playing for the past 5 years, unlike other developers who just slapped numbers at the end of their games (GTA, COD, DMC, MGS). Eden Games actually TRIED SOMETHING NEW, so god forbid that interrupts our daily injection of the same crap over and over again. Grand Theft Auto 4 is essentially all the previous games, just like Call of Duty, etc.. But of course more than likely this game will be ignored for another RE sequel...

I'm going to check it out for sure. Based on the reviews though, I wont pay full price. I'll wait till it's around $29.99 or so.

Hmm, missed this thread before....

Anywho, I downloaded the demo from Live, and I must say, Mr Zero Punctuation was pretty much spot on.

Just from the first episode and half of the second, I can see many MANY problems.

Controll is very sloppy, movement is slugish, player damage does infact look like pictures of damage glued on to clothing, camera perspective is horrible a lot of the time, tedious to play.....

I could go on, but I wont. After playing it, I understand why they put chapter skip in it.

But again, it DOES have some of the best damned looking fire effects I've ever seen in a game. Looks like they took video of real fire, and just overlayed on the game. Not ewnough to warent me buying this any time soon. Maybe when it's in the $9.99 bin.

Yeah, they added the number 4 to the end, and changed the entire premise of the game to where you are no longer alone and it's not dark because if there isn't a light somewhere, then something is on fire. :ponder:

You don't make a Jaws movie using a giant squid instead of a shark. When a game is set to a specific topic & format, particularly by the very nature of it's name, you're not supposed to try something new. If you want to try something new, then create a new game. (If anyone IS going to create a new Jaws movie with a squid, please call it Tentacle, followed by Tentacle 2, Tentacle 3 in 3D, Tentacle 4, etc.) - Edit: Well, poo, there already is a movie about giant squids: Tentacoli. :P

<Artlover> waits for PGR5, I understand it's going to be a JRPG Fantasy/Love story. :P

Edit: Grammatical error correction.

I haven't tried the game yet but it is on my GameFly list... I just didn't put it near the top.

I also read a small blurb.... maybe on Kotaku or in Game Informer..... that said "hopefully" the delay in the PS3 version of the game will result in an improved title. Who knows? I just know that most of the reviews of it were

I could go on, but I wont.

Ok, I lied. Have a couple of other points.

Inconsistant & devoid of reality.

Broken sparking wires = Bad/Death. Except when you're supposed to use them as a rope to climb/swing on. :?:

You can walk right through a broken pipe sticking out of the wall. See it go right through your character's body as the polygons render around it. And it's always in a place where the camera angle is zoomed up right on you so you can see this in the biggest clearest best angle & perspective as possible, as if they were trying to show this magical defiance of physics. More then one place this happens. You can interact with virtualy everything realisticly, but then it just throws horrible collsion detection in at the most obvious places in the most obvious way. :?:

Small objectives are unrealistic. Bring these two wires together but don't touch them to restore power? Ok, HOW does that restore power exactly? :?: Atari, here is how electrical circuits work. If power is off because of an open circuit, you want to connect the wires to close it. If power is off because of a short circuit, you want to seperate the wires to remove that short. Here would of been a better idea, how about having to change a burnt out fuse. Note # on fuse, go find a fuse somewhere of the same number to replace it with. Or maybe be tricky, circuit is overloaded and you need a bigger fuse to compensate. You know, something that just even so slightly has a resemblance to reality.

Keypad, just a small annoyance here. If you have blood on your finger and you touch something 3 times, each successive touch will leave a lighter smaller spot of blood behind. Now, I see that infact, the 3 splotches of blood get progressively lighter and smaller, so why is that order not the correct code? :?:

For real, Ben's assessment is spot on. This game "could" have been great, but there are just so many obvious glaring flaws (some quite major) and lacks any degreee of polish that it's just ends up being horrible. It honestly does seem like the game wasn't quite finished. :x

Sequels or not COD4, GTA4, DMC4 and MGS4 or all very good and polished games. Alone in the Dark is pretty sloppy and that's being kind. I'm all for something new, but I don't what to play a game with broken mechanics and choppy animation.

I just got 'limited edition' for 20 euros (+7 euro for shipping). Ok, the game could have been more polished, but overall I think it's a nice game with some really cool visual effects. I'll give it a 7 out of 10.

I thought I read the first 8 hours or so are kick ass and then the game took a 360 and sucked hard. I hadn't played the game though.

Must have been a typo. Probably should have read 'the first 8 hours or so are lick ass'

What sucks is I was kinda looking forward to that game for a long long time.

They announced the game early and showed us all killer screen shots and made empty promises for well over a year...maybe two.

The negative comments weren't drawn out though. No siree. Those came very very quickly...unlike the game.

i finally got this in the mail the other day and i finally got around to playing it.i played it for a few hours.there are parts i like about the game, but the control of the game is horrible at times.feels better to play in 1st person mode then in 3rd person.i think its a good purchase at $5.99,but would not recommend paying more then that for it.
