Atari5200 #1 Posted July 9, 2008 I was thinking about this and wondered if anybody else had any games they played as a kid that either they couldn't beat then and still can't now, or if there was a specific character in a game you couldn't beat then and now. For me it's Macho Man from punch out! , never have been able to beat him.

shadow460 #6 Posted July 11, 2008 Kintaro in MKII. Yup, I know, I should be able to mop the floor with him, but I have never beaten him on an arcade machine.

gdement #10 Posted July 11, 2008 (edited) When I look back, I notice that I've actually finished very few RPG's. Most of them I quit playing before getting to the end, although I probably could finish them if I tried. I haven't even finished Ultima 3 yet, which is the first RPG I ever played. In fact Ultima 7 is the only Ultima I've actually finished, though I get pretty far in several of them. It's pathetic, but I got stuck in Lunar: Silver Star for SegaCD. I think I was supposed to be racing to save some town from an ultimate evil of some kind, and the overworld music had changed to convey how desperate the situation was. I used a warp spell and went to *every single town* and couldn't find anything. After all these years I wouldn't be surprised if my savestate battery has died, and anyway I don't remember the plot anymore. Fail. I still haven't beat Ninja Gaiden. that game can be unbelievably frustrating Don't try. I'm convinced that game was designed by assholes. Atarifever #11 Posted July 11, 2008 It's still hit or miss if I take the Spiderman guy out in Revenge of Shinobi. That's the sticking point for me. If I get past that one, I finish the game (always with the good ending)

opeygon #14 Posted July 11, 2008 i can't beat gannon at the end of zelda II the adventure of link. i have tried several times in the last ten years and can't do it. couldn't do it in the late 80's either
thrax #15 Posted July 12, 2008 If there is an old game anyone has that you can't finish on a vintage system you might be able to finish it using an emulator if it is really fustrating you. With the advent of emulators, many include a "save state" feature. You can save the state every time you finish a level/section/etc. so you can get to the end. There was an apple ii game called Sea Dragon that was a pain in the butt to get to the bottom but with state saving it was do-able. I was finally able to see what was at teh bottom of those caverns with my submarine :-)
PressureCooker2600 #16 Posted July 12, 2008 Mike Tyson from MT Punch-Out. He always kicked my ass bad!!! I don't think I've ever beat an original series Mega Man. I always get to Dr. Wily and get my butt kicked.
PressureCooker2600 #17 Posted July 12, 2008 I still haven't beat Ninja Gaiden. that game can be unbelievably frustrating Don't try. I'm convinced that game was designed by assholes. That game is actually pretty easy up until the last levels. That's when the shit hits the fan and gets unbelievably annoying. I used to be able to play that game practically blindfolded. gdement #18 Posted July 13, 2008 I think Ninja Gaiden was a psychological experiment. Offscreen respawning enemies are a typical issue with NES games, but Ninja Gaiden seems to deliberately take it to an absurd level. You can't move 1 pixel without the enemy reappearing. It implements a high powered "jump back when hit" mechanism, a staple of the most annoying platformers ever, and about half the enemy placements are designed to use this against you for a 1-hit kill. No instant respawn - you go back to the beginning of the stage every time. The game has infinite continues and what were, at the time, very cool cutscenes between levels. Thus ensuring that no kid would stop playing until they've gone insane. If you *do* get to the end, getting killed sends you back something like 2 major levels (never got that far myself). You could measure a person's temper by how long they can play Ninja Gaiden. It has the perfect set of ingredients. Sorry for the rant... I really hate that game. PressureCooker2600 #19 Posted July 13, 2008 Sorry for the rant... I really hate that game. Damn.... That's in my top 5 "best NES games". NINJA GAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!! I think Tecmo needs to make a 8-bit sequel for it....like Capcom is doing for Mega Man.
mbd30 #20 Posted July 13, 2008 As a little kid (I'm 32 now), I could never defeat "Blues" in Yie Ar Kung Fu, my absolute favorite arcade game at the time. I still can't in MAME. He's absurdly harder than all the other guys. I also ditto everyone else's Ninja Gaiden comments. I've been playing it for years on the NES and then emulators and those later levels make me cry uncle.
mbd30 #21 Posted July 13, 2008 It's still hit or miss if I take the Spiderman guy out in Revenge of Shinobi. That's the sticking point for me. If I get past that one, I finish the game (always with the good ending) You can always use the ultra-cheap method of racking up extra lives then using your suicide magic
wstankew #22 Posted July 13, 2008 I've spent days playing Ninja Gaiden, only to reach the final boss and get my butt kicked repeatedly... I generally don't curse frequently, but when my girlfriend hears the vulgarities flying she knows that I'm trying to get past those damn birds/bats/ninjas with jetpacks and shuriken... kevincal #25 Posted July 13, 2008 Rayman and Zool 2 on the Jaguar are hard as hell... I like both games, but I've never beaten either without cheating... I can beat Tyson easily in Punch Out though.
