The Video Game Critic reviews Space Duel

Recommended Posts

Congrats to PacManPlus! Nice review of his game.

Looks as though the author at VGC isn't aware that Space Duel is a hack of Asteroids...

Just read this - thanks! :)

The author was way too nice - many people thought the lack of a tethered ship option was a very big deal, and it was... But there was alredy too much going on to try to replicate it. :(

Thanks again.

PacManPlus,

Space Duel is the #1 reason I bought a 7800! I've since picked up Asteroids Deluxe, Burger Drop, and almost all of the 7800 library. Thanks for getting me into the 7800! :)

Congratulations to 7800 Space Duel and its programmers!

This is one game I certainly would like to buy- my first non-ColecoVision homebrew, no less!

Know something? I'll bet this game would have been popular back in 1988 on the 7800.

Imagine a 7800 that, in 1988, had Asteroids Deluxe, Space Duel, Beef Drop, B*nq, and PacMan Collection. I'm not saying it would have saved the system, but it probably would have had less detractors. The Asteroids trilogy and PacMan Collection alone would make it worth a purchase.

Thanks guys - This really made my day. :)

It makes me want to keep doing this (besides the fact that I enjoy it).

* just notices Atarifever's signature... "I think I'm goin' Berzerk... I think I'm losing my mind"... I actually like (speaking in terms of just the song itself) Do The Donkey Kong.

Sorry - went off topic for a sec. :P

Yes, all PCP's work has been great. I buy it just because I want to support his work even when I have the roms all loaded into my CC2. The only one I do not have a rom for is B*nq. I may have to bug Ken for that.

Berzerk is my favorite song on the record, followed closely by Defender and PacMan Fever. I figured you'd like PacMan Fever the most.

Yes, all PCP's work has been great.

Marijuana has been doing pretty good stuff too.

I knew if I referred to Bob by his initials I would eventually get a response like that. :D

Very likely, since the majority of 7800 buyers were older gamers like myself. Atari did not seem to realize this, and the 7800 seemed to be caught in a sort of near-limbo, neither satisfying older gamers or younger gamers (who went with the NES, which was current).

Still, Space Duel for the 7800 gives some of us a chance to play a game we haven't played in decades.

I had never thought of that. I wonder if Atari had buckled down and directed their three systems to different markets, if they could have done just a little better.

7800 for people who had an Atari between 1977 and 1982 or so, who were in 1986 possibly even teenagers. They could sell them perfect ports of the arcade games they'd mastered in the arcades, but had had to settle for the 2600 etc versions in the previous generation. A lot of people were 7+ before playing the 2600 in late 70s, so they'd have been 16+ by the release of the 7800. They could even have done mocking commercials of little kids playing some cartoony NES game with girly music while some older guy is shown freaking out in mid 80s cool playing Robotron, or some kind of happy cartoon car game vs. Pole Position 2. They would have had a hard time selling less 7800s, even if the commercials offended the NES lot.

2600 for kids, showing games like Yars Revenge, Ms. PacMan, and Crystal Castles, and pointing out the low price point to parents concerned with buying expensive technology for little kids.

XEGS for the NES market, emphasizing whatever games they could make appear like NES games on commercials.

They tried selling things like Space Invaders on their 2600 commercial, library size on the XEGS ones, and Karateka on the 7800 ones. Seems like poor choices to me. Kids bought the NES for Mario, not for library size. Little kids didn't want to play Space Invaders in 1987.

Well that is a good review. He didn't even say that anything in your game was gay! That's quite and accomplishment for a VGC review!
