Rybags #5 Posted July 31, 2008 It's pretty common for authentic "new" 8-bit machines to go for over $150. Many collectors will even pay an extra $30 or more just for the original box, foam and booklets. I can't see anyone paying $2,500 for a 600XL though. Something like a 1400/1450XL for sure if it was never used.
re-atari #6 Posted July 31, 2008 I think his keyboard's faulty. He typed an extra "0" by mistake in the price. Ah, the blessings of Ebay spread around easily. Buyers without a clue and sellers with inflated expectations. Perhaps the price was listed in Iraqi dollars. On the other hand, if the message was typed in on that particular 600XL, it must have an intermittent failure in the keyboard decoding electronics. AFAIK all 600XL's came with a true PCB-type keyboard, where 800XL's usually had those crappy double-sheeted foil ones. The PCB-keyboards are very rugged, you'd have to try really hard to wreck one. But seriously, if you look around and take your time you'll find true bargains. For instance, a guy living not too far from me is clearing his collection of '80s computers as he will be moving shortly. He's giving away an Apple 2e, a European Apple II clone, a Laser 3000 (another Apple II clone), a 600XL, a TRS-80 and an Odyssey gameconsole. The lot is for free as long as it goes to a caring new owner. You'll have to travel to the Netherlands to pick them up, however... re-atari

MEtalGuy66 #14 Posted August 7, 2008 (edited) I got a 600XL off ebay that noone bid on because the picture just showed a hammered looking 600XL box, and the guy said he didnt know if it worked or not.. And the box is pretty hammered on the outside, but the 600XL has nevr been touched.. plastic film still on all the silver parts, and the dark brown case plastic still has the "glistening oiled look", like it was molded yesterday and never touched... even on the surface of the keys.. The machine works fine... I gave $10.00US for it.. which just goes to show.. people are still digging these things out of closets and atticks, never even used, by the hundreds... you see 10 new auctions for XLs on Ebay each week.. I remember when they were giving away 600XLs and VIC 20s as "prizes" (everyone who went got one) for looking at timeshare properties in about 84 or 85... I also remember SEARS having a "clearance sale" about the same time.. They had a MOUNTAIN of them stacked up in a "island" display in the middle of the electronics department. $25.00 for a 600XL, $35.00 for an 800XL... How many thousands of people got these as cheap gifts, hooked them up, had no idea what to do with them, and stuffed them away in closets, atticks, or storage rooms? Things may have been different in Europe.. But this is the way it was in the US... ANd theres still TONS of them still in their original packaging, pack-ratted away in the huge "junk collections" of posessions that represent the last 25+ years of our excessive lives... cephallus #15 Posted August 7, 2008 That's how I got my first computer...a Vic20. Ha. My aunt got it as a prize at a Christmas party circa 1981 or 1982. She had no clue what to do with it, so it went to me. I had it hooked up to a little b&w tv...no storage device...and would start typing in programs on it as soon as I was sure my parents were in bed. A lot of the time, my step-mom would notice that it was on in the morning and would flip the power off. I would cringe, but what could I say?
